Bottle @ Really late Summer Tasting Ulfborg, 2012. Pours clear golden with a bubbles on top. Honey, dust, cellar, bread and caramel. Thin.

500 ml can. Pours a dark amber with light head. Aroma of biscuits and malt with a hint of caramel. Flavors of light malts and grass/hay. Dry slightly bitter finish.

Cloudy blond color. The aroma is mild, spicy, some cloves. Dry and smooth mouthfeel, ordinary spicy wheat flavor, with correct bitterness; there is a very light residual sweetness that makes it more pleasant to drink.

(650mL bottle from the LCBO) Poured cool, the colour of medium roast coffee with a moderate beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, bit of wood, soya, faint grassy hops. An imperial stout nose. Flavour sweet roasted malts to start with a little hops citrus, rapidly overwhelmed by bitter mix of roasted malts and hops without too much pine showing through. Finishes dry, a little burnt. Mouthfeel medium, like a porter rather than the big boozy stout it otherwise is, watery rather than creamy. Not really a Black IPA in my books even given the nebulous nature of the style, but it’s not a bad higher ABV stout/porter type thing.

Bomber from the LCBO and last from this batch of brews, from this brewery, for this time. Pours a dark brown colour with a light beige head that has average retention, but not much lace. Roasted malts aroma balanced by the mild berries. The mouthfeel is kind of watery (expected a bit of tart), but easy going down. The taste is light as well with some notes of chocolate and raspberries. Hints of hop show up in there. Nothing too fancy, but a refreshing lightly-fruity porter.

Pretty good for a style that usually acts like some kind of an orphaned child. Smells like strong dark malts with hops, almost like a kind of imperial stout. There’s alcohol in the smell as well as a faint touch of anise. Pours black with long retaining head and great lacing. Taste is bittersweet but the caramelized malt takes over from the hoppy IPA character to push it more along the lines of a stout. Good drink. Bottle.

Purchased bomber of this at the LCBO (part of a bunch of Tree Brewing beers that made it here). Pours a clean copper colour with an off-white head that creates thick lacing and a nice coat over the brew. Alcohol is present in the aromas with some mild caramel malts, dark fruits (raisins), nuts, apples and light roasted malts. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel (when head is sipped). The alcohol is not as apparent in the taste. So are the other things though. Very mild burnt sugars, dark fruits and malts. Pretty mild overall, but gets better when eating salty snacks.

Thanks to my friend Simon that helped me with that one while camped at Lac Poisson Blanc. Aromas are not sticking out enough but we can pick-up a bit of caramel,biscuit and molasses. We can also feel very slight wood accents and anise Alcohol is too present. Appearance is lightly cloudy brown with generous creamy head, good lacing and average lasting. Taste is definitely on field berry accents; raspberry, cherry and cassis mainly. Caramel is backing the fruit flavors. body is medium and the finish has too much alcohol in it. Very interesting fruit flavors but not persistant enough because of the alcohol finish.

Smells like raspberry mostly. Pours dark brown with quickly disappearing head. Pretty high carbonation. Taste has coffee with the raspberry, some roast malts. It’s alright, a little better than I expected. Bottle from lcbo.
