This is the first brew that I tried at a new pub/restaurant called Hooley’s, in Ottawa, Ontario (back in March 2006). Pours a black colour with red highlights and a beatiful cascade-effect. Nice thick creamy tanned head that leaves good lacing and has great retention. The nose is slightly mild with molasses, coffee and roasted malt. Smooth semi-cream, semi-watery mouthfeel. The taste is quite light, but roasted malts show up. Not much bitterness and no candy flavours. After breathing a bit, and having food, the taste (roasted malt) started coming out more. This is a refreshing light tasting stout, for those who like Guinness, but find it too bitter. I still find that Beamish beats both.

Extremely dark-red (opaque) with the cascade-effect running through (up the hill). Massive thick and creamy tanned head. Mild aromas of nuts and alcohol . Taste is very smooth, with hints of molasse, and not bitter like Guinness. Dry finish. Good mouthfeel, but not as thick (and filling) as the above-named brew. I really enjoyed this Irish Stout, but still my favorite stays the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout (in the overall stout family).

50 cL can. Pours clear and golden orange with a huge off-white head. Aroma is roasted malty and slight breadish. Sweet and roasted caramelish malt flavoured. Light bitterness into a dry and roasted finish.

Clear amber with a large beige head. Aroma had toasted malt, caramel and breadish notes. Hints of hops in the flavour along with caramel and toasted malt. Finished dry and bitter.

I can’t say that I particularly love the flavor of this beer. These nitrogen widget cans can definitely hurt the flavor of a beer, but they make the thing so darn pretty. The head is like meringue, and the separating bubbles are enjoyable to watch. The aroma is roasty and a bit nutty. The flavor is on the bland side of Irish dry stouts but certainly not bad. It’s a welcome change from Guinness, anyway.

On tap and bottle. Very nice amber color. Malty aroma. Taste bittersweet with long nice bitter finish. I like this beer.

I was too kind to this one. I’d probably give it around a 3.5 today. Very nice chocolate aroma. Taste is mocha, creams and breads. Dry finish. Rated 11/22/2000

for a country so well thought of in the drinking community, they are really lagging in respect for beer. this is fine, drinkable red ale that someone who doesnt care about beer would say is good. for those of us that are a little more beer concious, it doesnt quite stack up. good try though, love their stout.

On draught, pours black with a small tan head, a la Guinness. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt and light espresso. Not too bad.
