Description
Alvinne is a 1200hl microbrewery in Flanders, Belgium. It has become an official brewery in 2004 and is located in the village of Moen, at the edge of the Mortagne touristic area and in the area where the historic breweries of the old Flemish Brown beerstyle are situated.
Their own yeast strain is called ‘Morpheus’ and was the reason to start experimenting with mixed fermentation, resulting in sour ales. Alvinne’s main mission is now to create innovative sour beers through a new style of Flemish blond sours by using the mixed fermentation method. You could call it the missing link between Oud Bruin and Lambic. Because of this, Alvinne has gained international attention and respect.
We already experimented with over 30 different kinds of fruits, herbs, plants, berries, flowers and vegetables. Next to the sour range, Alvinne has an interesting beer list that were aged on carefully selected used barrels, such as Cognac, Porto, Sherry, Calvados, Brandy, Red Wine and White Wine. Since 2018, we have started our own Membership “Alvinne’s Fellowship Of Exceptional Ales” to give our core fans the priority to get hands on our very exclusive and limited beers.

11.2oz bottle-pours a shaving cream light tan head and cloudy yellow/brown color. Aroma is yeast, malt, herbal/citrus-orange. Taste is yeast, malt, herbal/citrus-orange/spice hops. Not 115 IBU’s to my taste. Kind of a home brew character.

Red-brown hazy beer; disappearing beige head. Very nice lactic acid nose, bit lemony, obvious wood. Very dry in the mouth, lactic acid is there, but gets overwhelmed by a more stout-like, roasted taste, unusual in Oud Bruin. Finish is a bit wild yeast-like. Thinned by the acids, but not empty. A bit more lactic acid in the taste, as well as some sweet malts would make it more classical Oud Bruin. In the mean time, it’s quite good on its own. Certainly one of their better tries.

After having a positive experience with their imperial stout, I’ve decided to give this one a shot, despite people advising me otherwise - cloudy orange/gold beer, with a slight foamy ring - strong, sweet orange and apricot aroma, with light perfume and flowers and a slight metallic character - high but somewhat soft carbonation - strong bitterness combines with a vegetable and citrus pulp flavor, but in ways that do not compliment each other well - citrus tanginess, and a belgian fruitiness that the hops don;t fare well with - they need to take a lesson from la chouffe or guldenberg on how to make a hoppy belgian ale - I should have listened.

Bottle: Poures a murky hazy yellow with tons of floaters and carbonation, bubbled up and formed a foamy white head. Aroma is very spicy. Bitter fruit with loads of spice, the finish is almost metallic with some hop.

12 oz bottle from tyotoanderso; nose of caramel, brown sugar, yeast, and spices; cloudy copper with a big beige, glass-lacing head; flavor is tart and bitter, spicy, peppery, and caramelly, all at the same time. Kind of messy, all over the place flavors that don’t really complement each other.

Bottle: Poured a copper brown amber with a bubbly white head. Sweet fruit aroma. The taste was similar with a rich fruit and malt flavor. Finished dry and hoppy.

Bottle: Poured a dark chocolate color brown with a bubbly head. Old very lucent aroma musty and malt. The taste has that burnt rich sour malt but also leaves a tingle on the tongue and finishes sweet. Talked to the brewers at Bier Happenings fest in Zottemgen and they said this will not be brewed again. I recomment grabbing a 75cl bottle when you see it.

Pours deep black into a snifter. Off-white micro head has excellen retention and leaves spot lacing as it slowly recedes. Sour chocolate and alcohol aromas. Chocoloate liquor with an espresso burning alcohol finish.

Murky brown beer, that pours a huge head of foam - huge yeasty aroma, with strong belgian spiciness and heavy dark fruits - strong chocolate/fudge cocoa begins in the aroma and starts the flavor off - warming alcohol mixes with a high spice profile, and quad-like dark fruit flavors, which mingle with the rich chocolate flavors really well - full, creamy and chewy - probably the best belgian-style imperial stout I’ve had.

Freshly imported 330mL bottle, drunk on 9/13/07
Absolutely massive off-white head is very stubborn in receding, leaving plentiful lacing on the glass. Mostly clear, leaving the sediment in bottle. Peach-apricot is the body, with very fine bubbles rising.
Assertively hoppy in the nose and you can well believe the 115 IBU claim. Impressive that they got this much aromatic bitterness out of the hops. Lush and juicy, with crisp, fresh-cut grass, dill, oregano and even some resin suggestions. Crackery, dry medium malts keep things on the dry side, but with warming and breathing, some pale malts deposit a fair amount of sweet dough and honey on the nose. Light perfume on the end, as the hops mix with some apparent alcohol vapors. Surprisingly clean yeast, though it’s probably all drowned out by the hops. Medium-high strength of aroma.
Lime and lilac are cut with lemon and orange bitterness, with a strong stripping effect on the palate, on the finish. Sweet, creamy vanilla-honey malts are supple and the fine carbonation gives a creaminess to the texture (along with some hop oiliness), but the sweetness seems a bit excessive as the beer wears on. Furthermore, caramel-like flavors disrupt what I’d like to see an all-pale-malt grainbill. Very low yeast apparency, surprisingly. The hops are fun, sure, but it’s too forceful and slightly messy here (and the alcohol dosent help). I’ll take quality (Orval, Christoffel Blonde, Burgerbrau Helles, etc...) over quantity (this) any day.
