Hazy light gold. Toasty, hoppy nose. Very toasty, woody character...this is almost smokey. Long bitterness goes right into the finish. An interesting, unique example of Frankenlager. 7-4-7-4-16 = 3.8

vom holz @ Griess Keller
Lots of wood and earthy hops on the nose. Some nice subtle malt notes. Big wood notes on the palate. Earthy with dried flowers and herbs, cocoa. A unique gamut of flavours. Crisp ,firm body with a healthy dose of malts. Finishes dry and earthy with advanced wood notes. This woody version is one of the most complex, fully realized beers I’ve had in a long time. Wood fans rejoice!

Draught@Abseits. From Stein. Aroma is hops, earth, some bready maltyness. Flavour is quite much the same along with big yeasty, bready and earthy notes in the finish. Pleasant balance and refreshing. Fits pasta well.

(6/31/08) Bottle at Cafe’ Abseits in Bamberg. Served in a ceramic mug, but from what I can see it’s slightly dark golden with a big off-white head. Aroma has malt, caramel, some hops and hints of citrus. Sweetish malty flavor with some caramel at first. Continues drier with some citrus, and nice hoppiness with a bit of grass in the finish. Medium-bodied with a rounded mouthfeel.

On tap (Cafe Abseits, Bamberg): Golden, slightly lacing white head, very aromatic hoppy nose; strong bitter-seet flavour, medium bodied; lingering and lingering and lingering aromatic hoppy finish, supported by pale malt. Great, great stuff..........

Bottle at Cafe Abseits, Bamberg 5/11/07. Delicate gold colour with a fine, frothy head. Light summer fruit aroma, with floral hops and some biscuity malt. Flavour was finely balanced between fruity malt, grassy/floral hops and a dry, peppery finish. This excellent beer also had a great spritzy mouthfeel.

(bottle) Almost clear, except for some tiny floaties, golden coloured hue with a medium-sized foamy white head. Slightly grassy and herbal hoppy aroma with a touch of citrus and a light-sweet malty background. Bitter flavour, light to medium bodied, crispy mouthfeel. Herbal, slightly grassy hops-accented taste on a soft malty, slightly chalky base; dry and pleasantly bitter hoppy finish with a light smoky malty sweetness in the aftertaste. Top notch Pilsener in the Franconian way.

Bottle (purchased at the brewery): Greenish-golden coloured with a mid-sized fluffy white head; aromatic herbal-aromatic hops, underpinned by sweet pale malt; distinctive bitter-sweet flavour, soft, smooth MF; a faint hint of smoked malt (!) in the lingering dry bitter finish. A very fine stuff, Franconia rules........

Bottle (purchased at the brasserie): Golden, hazy, small head with a little lace; hayish-hoppy (!) and lemony nose; light to medium bodied, sweet-bitter flavour, almost a bit dryish, soft MF; short, lemony finish with a discreet sweetness. O.K., a decent Weizen from a first-class franconian Lager brewer..........
