Description

Tap at Mokhnatiy Khmil. Almost clear amber, off-white head. Clean hoppy ale aromă ripe citrus and grapefruit, subtle caramel malts. Similar taste, subtle clean piney bitterness. Well done.

Sample 100 ml at a tasting. White bread that’s gone slightly tart, pretty yeasty with an unbalanced dry bitterness. Not bad, but a bit dirty. 6-4-6-3-11=3/5.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft draft @ Wooly Hops. Old school go at an English Stout. Black with a big creamy tanned head. Nose is much like other USA style Ukrainian dark beers, thick blackberry, blueberry jam, herbal syrup; taste is massive thick roast with thick almost hard to drink vegetable blueberry syrup, very big herbal bitterness, strong burned malts, sugar,.. thick hard to drink syrup body. Odd mix of syrup & such bitter malts, odd, bit messy, not sure where they were going with this one, partially interesting & fun even if not really there and a bit hard to drink.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft draft @ Wooly Hops. Ella Singel hop ale if I got it right. Dark amber, creamy off-white head. Nose is milky, cold, cheesy hops, one more USA style Ukrainian beer where I just feel like the hops they used were old since I am getting once more cheesy hops. Taste is milky old yeast, spices, served way too cold (most beers I tried at Wooly Hops were cold but not this much too cold), weird old lemon peel, little hop, bit dull, milky. Yeasty body. Nothing terrible, too little hop, too much yeast once more, hops feel to cheesy (I got them largely only in the smell), too bad, manageable beer.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft draft @ Wooly Hops. Dark hazy golden, creamy soapy white head. Nose is soapy with citrus hops, served a bit too cold, green hops & low lemon grass. Taste is milky yeast, lemon grass, some odd yoghurt, little hops, lemon grass, citrus, tad bland. Body is yoghurt, yeast. Okay but promising if only more hops & less yeast, good start let us say.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft @ Wooly Hops. Brewed with Carpathian (where these guys are from) spices, not sure which one, waiter made an educated guess but I don’t have a specific list. Very dark amber, creamy off-white head. Nose is sweetish pine hop, mango, spice, candy malt, fruity & cheesy hops with some odd mint thrown into, interesting. Taste is very heavy on the spices upfront, getting very heavy mint, flowers, spearmint, intense, lightly vegetable spices, faint moly yeast in the finish, low milky yoghurt, touch basement, very heavy mint & spearmint taste takes some getting used to but I found it enjoyable in the end, very interesting. Shame about the yoghurt & low mold notes & body, would have definitely worked better without them, different yeast, more popping hops, this is a great & interesting start.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft @ Wooly Hops. Their dark house beer (unlike the blond perpetually available during my stay / kegs of the blond seemed to have some issues). Blackish dark brown. Nose carries some cheesy seemingly they used some old USA hops (I assume getting hold of prime USA hops for a small Ukrainian brewery might be bit of challenge), besides the cheesy hops nose is mainly thick blueberry & grape jam, thick. Taste is very thick blueberry low herbal jam, syrup, little hop, dry herbal roast, low roast in finish, chicory coffee. Very thick & syrupy. Strange beer, very non-BIPA, comparable to some other Ukrainian dark “craft” beers that tried in its strange dark fruit syrup stylings. Not bad, big hard to drink & a bit strange, partially enjoyable, a bit too heavy on the syrup, not really a BIPA for me.

(Kiev 2016) 400 ml. draft @ Wooly Hops. Dark amber, creamy tanned head. Nose is big Bavarian meaty smoke, very heavy leather, Lapsang Souchong, thick smoke & faint soap. Taste is massive oily smoked tea, very easy to drink, low hop oil, very big leather, Lapsang Souchong,… Very easy oily body. Very nice Bavarian-style smoked beer, lovely to drink, bit too simple maybe to really shine but this one & Pravda McGuiness were for me the finest Ukrainian beers out of the +/- 100 that I tried during my stay.
