Wynkoop Parade of Darks 2011. Black appearance with a tan head. Aroma is almost completely dominated by an intense, acidic, black coffee ground smell. There’s some hints of the roastiness of the malts- I think- but it’s hard to say over the coffee. Roasty chocolate malty, potent black coffee ground flavor. I’m usually not a fan of these overly assertive coffee beers but at least in this case, I didn’t get the rough coffee ground texture. Kind of weird to drink this from a can.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Very dark brown to black color with a medium bubbly beige to light brown head. Roasty aroma of chocolate, some coffee and nutty hints. Sweet flavor with malt, some roastiness, chocolate and coffee notes and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied. A well-made Porter.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Clear brown color with a small beige head. Nice aroma of nutty malt, some caramel, toasted bread, chocolate notes and a touch of hops. Sweet malty flavor with lots of nuts, caramel and a drier, slightly toasty and slightly hoppy (somewhat herbal) finish. Medium-bodied. Quite decent.

Nearly black pour - frothy lace - nose of cocoa, vanilla bean, light woodsmoke, espresso - actually smells pretty damn good - soft texture/carbonation - medium body - taste is much like the aroma, but lacking the smoke - flavor is medium dry, with fairly strong cocoa flavors - light bitterness and roast - very mild acidity - some vanilla on the tail end - subtle but flavorful, with a really nice balance and creamy finish - I dig it...a lot.

22 oz. bottle. Pours hazy orange with a medium tan head. The aroma is heavy caramel, bread, earthy hops, and some spices. The flavor is very sweet, with a significant bitterness and spiciness in the middle and finish. The palate is heavy, sticky, grainy and syrupy. Overall, this is a big, malty beer, with a lot of flavor and a good mouthfeel.

Can @ home. Clear, burnt orange appearance with an ivory head. Toasty, caramel, Munich malty, toffee, mild noble hoppy aroma that’s a touch spicy. Somewhat spicy, caramel/Munich malty, toffee flavor, somewhat light bodied for the style. Drinkable but disappointing.

12 ounce can shared at the 16th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 11/5/11. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a thin frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of floral, herbal and citrus hops. The taste is extremely vegetal, almost squashy with some faint sugary malts. Weird. Medium bodied. Low carbonation.

22 oz. bottle, sent from gn0sis (thanks Eric!), split 3 ways, pours rich dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, toffee, some metallic notes and candy. Flavour of candied fruits, toffee and harsh hops mixed in there. The malts and hops don't exactly mesh well, but the flavours are great. Decent barley wine.

Bottle @ home. A touch hazy, golden yellow appearance with a white head. Quite spicy, yeasty, clove, light banana, sweet wheat malty aroma. Clove, light banana, light citrus, spicy hoppy, wheat malty flavor. This really looks like they filter it despite the description, in which case this should be classified as a Kristallweizen. There are some yeast characteristics but they are mild.
