Description
Founder Tsjomme Zijlstra's idea to start his own brewery came to him after his time in England. He started to brew his own beer at home and decided in 2014 that he wanted go bigger. He met Menno and John, owners of Brouwerij de Molen in Bodegraven, and told them his story. They taught him how to brew with one of their old brewing installations. Kaapse Brouwers was born.

We are Kaapse Brouwers. We are the brewers who introduced craft beer to Rotterdam, and Rotterdam to the world. With our Kaapse recipes we brew non-conformist beers. We choose for bold recipes and love to experiment with different flavors to create contemporary craft beers.

Can. Orange copper pour. Aroma of herbal pine, buttery grapefruit, caramel and malt. Taste has bitter herbal pine, caramel, malt, sticky resinous hop and bitter floral hops. It's a bit flat, little more carbo would have made this more refreshing, but I like the west coast piney bitter flavors.

Hazy golden, big white head. This is weird. Strong vegetal bitter, rabbit food pellets, light sweet malts and a flimsy body. [ 📺 Near Dark, 1987 ]

Best before 05/12/27, 330ml bottle; Vintage 2017, anniversary barley wine

APPEARANCE: dark caramel color with loads of cherry, mahogany and ruby hues under the light, fairly lasting small beige like head, moderate lacing

AROMA: rich and very inviting aroma, loads of toasted sugars, caramel, hard candy, jam, festive bread, sweet bread crust topped with marmalade, sharp raisins, dried apricots, mild nuttiness, very gentle herbal & earthy notes from hops in the background; a touch of soft liquor like alcohol, subtle oxidation note (lipstick, wax)

TASTE: soft and smooth carbonation, moderate silky and syrupy mouthfeel, medium full body but not full; medium sweet onset of caramel, melting sugars, candy, dried fruits like raisins, apricots, marmalade on toast; solid amount of hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness, herbal and woody presence, just a soft note of spicy alcohol (no heat at all), smooth nuttiness in the middle

OVERALL: aged really nicely, no drop of aromas or flavors, neither noticeable flaws; rich barley wine sweetness with pleasant bitter bite still after more than three years; dangerously drinkable with perfectly hidden alcohol

Aroma of fruity, floral and spicy hops (Sladek), also notes of Szechuan pepper. Distinctly peppery and slightly dry flavour, notes of spicy saison yeast and herbal / spicy hops.
