Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

37.5 cL bottle, trade with BelJohansen. Pours hazy orange with a slowly diminishing creamy white head. Orange and acidic dry wooden aroma. Flavour is solid acidic to citric with a nice orange fruity note. Has a distinct wooden note I only sensed during the first sip. The citric flavour makes me shiver. Bone dry yet fruity. Thirst quencing - nice one.

Bottle picked up from Dranken Geers back in March, had this 11-05-08 Pours orangey, no head, cloudy served slightly chilled. The aroma is slightly sour and farmyard but with some gentle strawberryness sat in the background. The taste is more strawberry than I anticipated but with a lovely sourness that just underpins thing beautifully. This could just about be one of my perfect summer sips, here I am sat in my garden with house martins and swallows screeching and darting overhead, the odd cabbage white butterfly fluttering past and the lilting hum of traffic on the M40 carried on an early summer breeze ahh bliss. I think this would be difficult to improve on although just once or twice I felt that maybe a little carbonation might have made this even more interesting, but regardless it was a truly lovely beer.

(From old notes, bottle (750 ml) at Pikkulintu on 2008-01-11) A bit acidic at the beginning and the acidiness increases as the beer gets warmer. Cherry in taste and nose. A good lambic. Unfortunately, I haven’t written down the vintage or BBE date,

Rated April 2008. Two bottles of the 1994 vintage courtesy of dpflanzer, wow, thanks again David. Pours still with hazy amber body. The aroma is full and complex and tough to describe. I seem to be getting smooth cherry fruitiness, earthiness, sugared lemon wedge tartness and rotting wood. The taste begins with a shiv of tartness followed up by blended and smoothed over cherry fruitiness that becomes earthy, wet cement, herbal and vegetable. Very nice experience. Again huge thanks to David for holding on to these for well over a decade and sharing with us.
