Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Can: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrusy hoppy notes with some light mandarin notes also perceptible. Taste is also mostly dominated by citrusy hoppy undertones with some mandarin notes and light bitterness. Body is about average with good carbonation. Enjoyable citrus IPA.

Draft at Pizza Peel. Clear deep golden color medium white head. Dank sweaty citrus aroma. Taste is bitter resiny citrus with a harsh mouthfeel. A big beer, and preferable tom most NE IPAs in my book.

Pour is a clear golden with a large white head. Aroma is a pithy tropical fruit. Not a huge blast of fruit but just enough let you know it's going in the tropical direction. Flavor is more of both fruit additives. You get some mango and passionfruit. Even though this is a 8% beer this is more of a pale ale than anything. Very refreshing but light in flavor. Usually fruited IPA's aren't my thing but when you use both mango and passionfruit you got me this time.

Sample at the 6th Annual Craft Beer Festival by The Community Tap on 04/21/2018. Hazy orange-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Sticky strings of lace. Aroma of herbal hops, citrus and malt. Medium body with flavors of grapefruit, grassy hops and bready malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a citrusy hop aftertaste. Decent overall.

Solid fruity IPA, piling chunks of mango and passionfruit on top of a nice citra IPA, mixing tropical notes with grapefruit, earth, and modest pine on the back end. Malts add a hint of grainy sweetness and a cracker base, while the fruit juice gives depth to the middle. Never grows sweet, and the finish is a nuance blend of mango/passionfruit tart notes and a dry, bitter fade. Pours clear gold with a brief white head and spotty lacing. Perky texture and medium body make for good summer drinkin'. Seems like it could use more fruit on the nose, but the Citras come through, at least. Not bad.

Not much going on here; the only thing West Coast about this IPA is the moderate bitterness, lacking much of the hefty caramel-tinged malt base or strong citrus hop notes you want in the style. Resin on the back end doesn't come anywhere near the early-2010s heights of hop vitriol insanity, instead offering a manageable dose of pine before fading into a weak, mostly nondescript fade. Hints of grapefruit and earth pop up, but not enough to add much depth. Very skippable.

Nice pils from Highland, a tad on the sweet side, but with a lovely fruity hop undertone and a grassy, floral finish to dry out the back end. Peach, straw, and white pepper add to the middle, while grainy malts and bread add a solid base. Could use a little more oomph from the German hops on the fade, but otherwise a very tasty pint. Pours a clear yellow-gold with a brief white head and little lacing. Flowers and grain on the nose. Medium-light body is nicely carbonated and perfect for the style. Good pint.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a clearish straw gold with a small head that dissipates quickly. Lemon zest, clove and light peppercorn on the nose. Thin body and watery on the palate. Some lingering clove and peppercorn flavors come out. Lingeirng peppercorn and lemon on the finish. The citrus comes off a little overdone and palate is just too watery.
