Description
The unique eight-sailed windmill at Heckington near Sleaford in Lincolnshire is the sole survivor of only seven of the type ever built in Britain. Heckington’s eight-sailed windmill owes its survival to John Pocklington (1865-1941) who combined the machinery from Skirbeck with the tower at Heckington in 1892. He kept the mill in working order even when it became obsolete and was commended by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for his restoration of 1933. Kesteven County Council (later absorbed into Lincolnshire County Council) purchased the mill in 1953 and the building has been administered by the Friends of Heckington Mill since 1982.

Tony Pygott set up the six barrel brewery in the adjacent former grainstore in June 2010 and the first brew took place on 22nd June. Having built up a distribution network, 8 Sail Brewery cask and bottled-conditioned beers can be found in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and further afield.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a large billowing head of large long lived bubbles. Chocolate biscuit, plum, toast, coffee, sour cherry. Little over carbonated so feels a touch thin. Decent.

500ml bottle purchased from Beers of Europe and drunk at home. The pour is very dark brown, almost black, with a small ring of beige head. Liquorice, plum, soy sauce and some balsamic vinegar in the aroma. Sweet taste with a light sour vinegary note and some warming chili. Full body for the ABV with light carbonation. I didn't care for it, not sure it's as its supposed to be.

(Bottle) Pours black with tiny white head. Aroma of roast grains and veges. Light body and carbonation. Surprisingly tart in a somewhat vinegary way with some roast malt. Not good. Maybe this was off.

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, May 22. Thanks Jeremy for this! Clear amber, sparse off-white sheet atop. Earthy rye dominates, light spice, with an underlying sweetness that seems more akin to blueberry than rhubarb. Not really my cup of tea but executed well.

30th May 2022; Shrewsbury Beer Share Evening in Chez Sophie. Five guys enjoying themselves. Brought by me; 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe: BB June 2022 (just in date then!). Clean chestnut red/brown, wispy off-white head. Light rhubarb twist to a strong Rye flavoured beer, didn't really take to it.
