Description
The unique eight-sailed windmill at Heckington near Sleaford in Lincolnshire is the sole survivor of only seven of the type ever built in Britain. Heckington’s eight-sailed windmill owes its survival to John Pocklington (1865-1941) who combined the machinery from Skirbeck with the tower at Heckington in 1892. He kept the mill in working order even when it became obsolete and was commended by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for his restoration of 1933. Kesteven County Council (later absorbed into Lincolnshire County Council) purchased the mill in 1953 and the building has been administered by the Friends of Heckington Mill since 1982.

Tony Pygott set up the six barrel brewery in the adjacent former grainstore in June 2010 and the first brew took place on 22nd June. Having built up a distribution network, 8 Sail Brewery cask and bottled-conditioned beers can be found in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and further afield.

Gravity cask at Lincoln Beer Festival 2026. Pours deep mahogany brown with a ruby tinge, beige foam. Toasty malts, burnt toffee, berries, hints of liquorice and coffee. Medium body, dry finish. Decent hefty mild.

A bottle purchased online from Beers of Europe and drunk at Dad’s while home on holiday. Aroma: barely detectable malt. Appearance: clear cola, one finger tan head. Palate: medium-bodied and oily on the tongue, average carbonation; good mouthfeel at the finish, very robust malty bite. Taste: lightly sweet with malt loaf, espresso coffee, dark sea salt chocolate. Aside from the disappointing aroma, this one is packed with flavour and well worth drinking.

A bottle purchased online from Beers of Europe and drunk at Dad’s while home on holiday (n.b. this review is for ‘Smoky Chimney' [6.0%], not 'Smoky Black' [6.0%.]) Aroma: it smells like a regular well-malted porter. Appearance: clear cola, one finger tan head. Palate: medium-bodied and rather oily, average carbonation; strong malty aftertaste. Taste: lightly sweet, the malty flavour is rather astringent. There is a barely discernible smoked taste, but ‘Smoky Chimney’ is pushing it a bit. Otherwise, an unremarkable porter.

Bottle. Near clear deepish amber beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Light palate, mildly dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Somewhat thin bodied malts, a thin malt cream and caramel that isn't that sweet. A bitterness in the mid that is vaguely woody. Back end has those Belgian candy sugar flavours coming through but never overheating. The bottom and yeasty part of the bottle is much more hazy and increases the bitterness. The clear part was a decent take on a Belgian beer. The yeasty part went down the sink.

Handpull cask at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Mid- to dark reddish brown with some translucency. Big chocolate malts, some plummy character. Sweet taste, lots of gritty Ovaltiney malt. Some bitterness right at the finish. Thin body with soft carbonation. I think it's pretty good, perplexed by all the lower rates.
