Established in 1988
From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."
Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Cask at the brewpub. A clear, dark golden beer with a small off-white head. Fruity, lightly malty aroma. Pine cones, grass and a hint of something toffee-like. It’s super smooth and soft on the palate, full bodied and quite dry. Bread-like malts, pine cones and grass in the flavor, flower hints, soft bitterness. Lasting fruity finish. Quenching, easy drinkable and a bit too British. 150609

Bottle from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is grassy/herb/salad and a little bit like Elmer’s Glue. Appearance is hazy gold with good sparkle and massive fluffy white head (actually a little annoying) and copious splotchy foamy lacing. Taste starts sweet, like white wine and then turns as if wine that has gone over (perhaps my beer had?) and a little sour. Palate is thin, light bodied with absent carbonation and I don’t know if I’d call it a finish or just a bad taste left in my mouth. Brew date was 2/15 so shouldn’t be spoiled by now. I think it’s just a rotten beer; I poured the remainder of it out--most of the 22 ounces. At this point I’ve learned my lesson--I have never liked anything brewed by this brewer and this will be the last beer of theirs I try.

Bottle from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is strong initially of sparkling wine, then yields to bready malt. Appearance is beautiful clear sparkling gold with thick creamy white head with good retention and light but attractive lacing. Taste is straight up the middle medium to heavy sweet malt--a little strong, even for my taste. Palate is extremely thin, light body with surprisingly little carbonation given the amount of sparkling. Abrupt dry finish. Overall, this is a very attractive looking beer that has a fairly strong aroma without complexity, is overly sweet and has nothing to offer the palate. Not even really a great session beer.

22 oz. bottle from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is faint--a bit like beer that sat out all night or that someone vomited. Appearance is hazy light gold with massive off-white foamy head (actually a little annoying because it took so long to go away) with foamy lacing. Taste is similarly lacking though not mildly aversive like the aroma. Mildly bitter. Palate is light bodied with thin texture and soft-flat carbonation. Finish is mercifully brief. Overall, this is not a good beer. Perhaps I had a bad one? I can’t imagine any place calling itself a craft brewer would put this out--I’d rather have a Miller Genuine Draft or a Michelob. If someone hands you one, make sure it is ice cold. Avoid.
