Gritty McDuff's
Regional Brewery

Maine,
United States 🇺🇸
Associated with 3 Venues
Established in 1988
From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."
Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Cask gravity at the 2014 GBBF. Aroma is sweet vanilla oak barrel with caramel biscuit and just a whiff of alcohol,. Nice hazed red colour, semi viscous, light halo head. Flavour is nutty malt , raisin and vanilla, caramel and warming alcohol, quite rounded and balanced palate is sticky sweet, lowish carbonation. Nice barrel aged beer.

Bomber purchased at the brewpub. Brown color. Very little aroma. Flavor has a hint of caramel, nuts, and dry malt. Dry, bitter aftertaste.

Good grief, no one’s ever added this beer to this website. I’ve had this more than enough times when I lived in Maine, well, here’s my take on it.
This was always poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly decent hazy brown color with a soft one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than twenty seconds.
The smell had an exceptional amount of nutty sweet caramel and toffee with a fairly decent nice roasty quality to it.
The taste was extremely sweet through the nutty to caramel to toffee-ness, not as much balance as some might hope for.
On the palate, this one sat at/about a light to medium with a fairly decent sessionable aspect about it. I have to admit, this one does come across fairly watery almost every time I’ve had it.
Overall, for the most part, its a decent English Brown ale that sits fairly lower than a lot of other brown ales one might find. With that in mind, this actually goes fairly nicely with its respected food. Worth having again, I say so, put it with some NY cheesecake for dessert and most likely you’ll have a pretty nice night.

This is an Irish Red Ale, hmmm..as an American with Irish blood, well, uh...okay, I certainly hope my notes speak my mind.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a super light red color with a large transparency running about the beer to allow some light carbonation to be seen rising and trying to fill a one finger white foamy head that’s trying to dissipate within less than thirty seconds.
The smell had some burnt light caramel tones. Hops, what hops, they weren’t there, no matter how many times I’ve had this brew. They just weren’t.
The taste was mainly sweet and no balance and it had a really strong caramel aftertaste which ended up leading to a super dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly sessionable quality to it. The carbonation was actually somewhat decent.
Overall, for the most part, this wasn’t much of an Irish Red ale. As someone from an Irish descent, I’m actually somewhat offended. No way would I have this again and its not because I hate basketball, its because this beer just isn’t that good.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 5/20/14
Aroma: The aroma is rich and malty, fruity, some caramel, toffee, and brown sugar
Appearance: It pours a clear amber color with a fizzy beige head and occasional lace
Flavor: The flavor, like the nose, is rich and malty as well, pretty sweet, with a light bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-full, it has a fairly thick texture, and a lively carbonation
Overall Impression: This is some pretty solid stuff, and pretty sweet too. The carbonation hurts the drinkability here a bit. Overall, this is a solid example of the style, but not something I see myself seeking out.

The appearance had a brown body and has a thick, lumpy white head that lasts for about forty seconds. Some carbonation is seen rising with minimal lacing around the glass.
The smell was malty with some earthy hops, some nuttiness comes out as the beer warms.
The taste was centered around the malts and it gives a pretty good sweet yet earthy and slightly bitter flavors. Everything is balanced pretty well. Some apple comes out once the beer warms.
On the palate, it sat at/about a medium, and had the right amount of carbonation that is felt on the tongue.
Overall, this was a pretty good beer that I would have again.

The appearance was a clear amber body with a lumpy super bubbly foamy head, some light lacing.
The smell had hops, pine, malts.
The taste was bittersweet through the pine, and hops, subdued malts.
On the palate, it sat at/about a light, watery, sessionable, no aftertaste, malty finish.
Overall, it was decent for the style, but I’m unsure if I would pursue this again.

The appearance had a chestnut/copper colored body, small white one finger head, lacing slid quickly into the body.
The smell had a sweet subdued caramel, slightly bready.
The taste was pretty much the same, but coming through in a bland sort of way.
On the palate, it sat at/about a medium, slightly sessionable, creamy aftertaste, sweet bready finish.
Overage average for the style, but acutally I liked it and went nicely with some Christmas cookies.

The appearance had a light golden colored body with a small off-white head that disappeared within a couple seconds, it left a slightly foamy lacing around the glass and rings as it went down, there was a decent amount of bubbles that came up.
The smell had some hops and just a bit of pine and citrus.
The taste had hops, but it wasn’t heavy or overbearing, some of the pine and the citrus comes back at the end.
On the palate, it sat at/about a medium, and was fairly sessionable. There was a moderate amount of harshness on the tongue, no aftertaste or finish.
Overall, this was a pretty decent brew and I might have it again. However, I would most likely lean towards to trying to get it on tap somewhere.
