Associated with 3 Venues
Established in 1988
From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."
Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

* Old rating. 12 Fl.Oz. bottle, best before N 10. Dunkel-dickflüssiges Bier, Gewürze, brauner Zucker, aber nicht sonderlich tief. Nicht sonderlich aromatisch-bitter, echt enttäuschend...

Bottle from Harvest Market Pours a deep amber/copper color with a good sized off white head that persists for quite a while. Aromas of rich caramel malt with a bit of a mineral/sulfur edge, light earthy hop aroma. The flavor is rich caramelized malt sugars with lots of toffee. Light fruit, earthy hop, light mineral flavor. Medium body moderate carbonation. Decent brew.

GBBF Day 3. Cask. Hazy deep amber beer with a few pale tan bubbles for a head. Palate is light and semi dry. Fine carbonation. Tangy dark fruits, spice, smooth but strong bourbon. Smooth dry finish. Spicy linger. Strong barrel presence. Nice!

Sampled @ GBBF day 3. Clear chestnut brown color, very small head. Smell and taste malts, lightly barrel aging flavours, lightly alcohol, a touch of liquor, a hint of caramel, moderately bitter. Well not bad, nut I was expecting more.

Part of their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a deep amber colour, clean, with a frothy off-white head and decent lacing and retention. Mild grassy nose with fruity malts. Wet mouthfeel with a little dryness in the end. Caramel malts with the hops. One of their better brews, but still, nothing too fancy.

Part of their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a very slight hazy golden colour with a frothy warm cap and decent foamy-creamy lace. Diacetyl aromas with butter and butterscotch. Milder caramel malt taste with hints of grains in the finish and light hops. Some sweetness, some bitterness, but nothing really good as a little too rich for a good pale ale.

Part of their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a real deep amber colour, almost copper, with a very warm cap, average retention and lace. Aromas of butter and butterscotch with hints of nuts. Milder tasting with diacetyl notes. Hints of wood, but nothing to save this one. Would not have again.

Purchased in their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with big bubble carbonation. Frothy white head with good lacing. Big grain nose with honey hints. The grain is there in the taste, but with some decent hops balancing things. A nice cereal malt summer ale.
