Description
Since 1988, Gritty's missions have been to craft the best beers possible, serve the very best pub food, and to have way too much fun doing both. For more than 30 years, Gritty's has succeeded in all three (especially the third...just sayin').

From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

The appearance is a golden yellow/orange color with a semi-thick cream looking head that lasts about one minute. The beer has a light cloudiness and has a lacing that slides gently down the glass as it drinks. The smell is pretty malty with some light hops and some ever so light grains. The taste is slightly grainy with the malts coming back and brings in an ever so slight sweetness to it. The palate is medium yet balanced and smooth, and somewhat dry. Overall, this is a good beer that is very drinkable.

The appearance is a deep golden brown color with a short white head that lingers a bit and leaves a good lacing along the sides of the glass. The smell contains caramelized malts, vanilla, butterscotch and touches of hops. The taste has a sweet but a sort of mildness of caramel and butterscotch within the malty character. Once again the hops are mild and balances superbly in this beer. There is a sligbhtly sweet aftertaste. The palatel is smooth and a little crisp, with a medium body, and medium carbonation. The finish is a bit dry. Overall, this is a good beer.

12 oz. bottle in a four pack from Grays Beverage. Over-carbonated. Had to pour extremely slow and wait as the head died to pour the other 6 oz. of beer from the bottle. Well, the retention last for a good while. Hazy copper in color. Aroma has sweet citrus, caramel and honey. Lots of malt at the back end, not finding much in the way of hops or bitterness. Lots of biscuit, bread malts. The body is medium with a smooth texture. Very sweet and more like a Pale Ale then an IPA or I had some old stuff. Either way it is much better than I thought it would be.

GBBF. Light haze on this amber beer. Smooth palate with a little fine carbonation. Quite a sweet IPA this one! The pale malt has a subtle estery note of sweet banana and bubblegum and also some honey. The citrus hop is also quite sweet. Finishes dry. Nice.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 9/19/12

Aroma: The nose has some roasted notes, light coffee/chocolate, and a little tobacco
Appearance: A dark brown color with a couple inches of thick, foamy, lasting brown head and heavy lace
Flavor: Tastes roasty and malty up-front, but there's something dry and off that overwhelms the finish
Palate: The body is smooth and creamy, a little watery, with a soft carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: Overall, this was a pretty mediocre beer. The nose is fine, unoffensive, and a little dull, but fine, The pour is the highlight here for sure, the flavor (particularly the finish) is the low light, and the body is fine, but again, kind of dull. Not for me...

Location: 12 oz bottle from a 6 pack, a gift from the in-laws from their recent visit to Maine, I have no idea where it was purchased, 8/29/12, as "Maine's Best IPA"

Aroma: The aroma is fairly muted, with earth, grapefruit/citrus notes, caramel, and a little butter
Appearance: It pours a caramel-orange color with an inch thick foam of beige colored head
Flavor: The flavor is way too butter heavy, with some bitter hop notes and a little caramel sweetness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth, creamy feel, and a lengthy, dry finish to it
Overall Impression: This one would have been a lot better if it wasn't for that annoying buttery flavor that pops up. The other components are there, and even sneak out a bit as the beers warms, but they just can't completely overcome that weird buttery flavor. I'm being a touch repetitive intentionally, because that's my Maine (pun intended, sorry I couldn't resist) recollection of this one. Even though it is out of character, I'll skip the "Maine's Best IPA" joke. With a little work I could see this one getting better. Maybe one of the 5 remaining bottles will change my mind and force a re-rate?

22 ounce bottle. Pours opague black with a rocky tan head. Rich roasted malt aroma hints at charcoal and coffee. Dryish roasted malt flavor with a slight bittersweet chocolate character. Rather thin bodied with a mildly sour lactose malt midtaste. Finish is bitter and short-lived.

Cask at GBBF. Clear brown beer. Semi dry and semi soft palate. Rich hops. Not too bitter. Well balanced with some rich malt. Tasty and full of flavour but not in your face.

Bottle from Liz. Pours light golden amber with a slight white head. Light citrus and caramel aromas. Med body. Thickish feel, so maybe towards full. There’s some caramel, and some citrus, but not all that much, and it’s really only bitter enough to avoid being sweet. It doesn’t have that roasty APA malt, and it’s not bitter in my book. Kind of like some of those other beers from Shipyard - KBC and Seadog. Like they didn’t want to use a lot of ingredients to make a statement.
