Gritty McDuff's
Regional Brewery
in Portland,
Maine,
United States 🇺🇸
Associated with 3 Venues
Established in 1988
From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."
Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Dark with a creamy tan head. Aroma is nicely roasted malts, chocolate, some light hops, too. Similar flavor. Not over the top roasted malts, just a nice, balanced, dry stout. Smooth and easy drinking. Good.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 10/24/10
Aroma: The nose is caramel malts, a little bit of spice, and some light floral notes
Appearance: It pours a mahogony color with a creamy tan head and some spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is medium (plus) sweet up-front, herbal and bitterness on the finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has a that British ESB feel to it, and a somewhat sticky feel
Overall Impression: This is an alright ESB. The flavor is OK, and there isn't anything particularly wrong with it, but it isn't so exciting either. Just a boring ESB. It drinks alright I guess, but something about it just doesn't work that well.

Crisp, very slightly hazy amber coloured body with a copper glow and a nice dense tan head - this is what an IPA should look like! Aroma of fresh hops, relatively low a.a., a dose of caramel, honey, light malt and a touch of alcohol - not too potent. Medium-bodied; Assertive bitterness, but the hops don’t show much at all. Light flavours of malt and caramel come through, but the hops aren’t bright or assertive at all. Aftertaste is mild as well with some light piney flavours coming and a touch of honey, but an alcohol finish and a very light bitterness is all that’s left. Overall, a nice looking and smelling beer, but the taste just isn’t there and there aren’t any complexities or anything that lingers at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 04-September-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 28-September-2010.

From cask. Pours hazy dark orange with a small off-white head. Dry brett and hoppy aroma. Bitter and bone dry flavoured. Citrusy and brett. Dry wooden finish. Strange, not sure the cask has done this one much good.
