Artisanal ale from Genua, seemingly inspired by Belgian Scotch ales but also tending towards imperial stout. Very thin, quickly dissolving and eventually all but disappearing, beige head, colour a very dark brown, bordering on black. Complex aroma of raisins, coffee, sweet paprika, dark chocolate, dried plums, pear syrup, dry sherry, peat. Dried and candied fruits in the mouth, vinous and oily, very agreeable mouthfeel, sherry-like accents but the coffee and chocolate qualities coming from deep, dark and roasted malts are dominant. Some subjective woodiness in the finish, long and bitter due to the roastedness, but also surprisingly thin in view of its impressive strength. Complex and refined nonetheless.

Bottle from Birratrovo, Como
Slow gusher; pours black, with large but not persistent head. The aroma is strange; roasted malts, coffee, barrels, a bit vinous, light aniseed, mold; stale. Moderate roasted malt flavor, with a rather dry and overcarbonated mouthfeel; there is some black liquorice, and again a strong stale impression; the alcohol is perceived stronger than it should.
I’m quite sure that it refermented too much in the bottle and it’s no longer what it was intended to be.

Hazy brown color, steady brown head. Woody and cellary aroma. Medium-bodied. Caramel, lavendel, wood, cellar in the flavor. Nice smooth palate. Their wood ageing gives too much cellary flavors to beers.

At a tasting at KyotoLefty’s place. A dark oily reddish black with a sweet malty boozy umami aroma. The taste is barrel aged funky chocolate & bourbon on a light-medium body. A decent beer but it came out kind of average compared to lots we poured last night.

Black colour, tan head. Sour aroma, chocolate, coffee, mocha, somewhat vinous. Sweet flavour, light sour notes, malts, milk chocolate and cacao. Medium to full body, sweet finish, chocolate, malts and sugar. Don’t know if the sour notes are supposed to be there, but they really add some depth to the flavour profile. Love this beer, especially considering the ABV.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBSG II. Opaque dark brown to black color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, a slight touch of sourness but also a hint of sweetness, some light to moderate roastyness and some coffee. Medium body and carbonation.
