[cask at Cockney Pub] An orange beer with no head. The aroma is very faint with fruity notes. The flavor is flat and metallic like some cask beers. But the flavor also contains fruit and a good hops, that gives it a slight bitterness. It has a very fine balance. And is very fresh and mild which makes it easy drinkable - I'd call it a session beer.

ZERO carbonation. Looks very murky. Not very inviting. Pleasant aroma of molassas and brown sugar. Taste is very vinous. Slight bitterness up front with some caramel, vanilla extract and plums later on. Flavors continue in a somewhat long finish. Slight maltiness. Complex and VERY wine like. Not sure if it works for me, though.

A yellow beer with no head and no aroma. The flavor is slightly sweet and slightly bitter which leaves a very good balanced beer. A nice bitter.

2002 Bottle: This isn''t the first corked beer I have had, but it is definitely the first corked beer I have needed a corkscrew to open! Pours a dark reddish-mahogany color with virtually no head or lacing. Aroma of alcohol, raisins and grapes, and spice. Flavor is malty and spiced with some nutmeg. I found it a little earthy but thin. I think I may look for this one again next year.

Bottled. Dark amber. Rich woody malty nose. Extremely malty, gente warming mouthfeel, incredibly rich, but still not overly sweet. Mature with notes of fine malt whiskey, really complex. By far the best example of British barleywine I've sampled.

Golden; hazy; wheaty aroma, w/slight citric hop note; soft, creamy body; still finishes refreshing despite its lightness, lack of acidity and general malt-accent.

Sampled cask conditioned at Shepherd's Inn, Melmerby, Cumbria.

I am normaly not a big fan of the high voltage beers, but this one was remarkable. A color like fine cognac or sherry and a distinct whisky aroma. The flavor was again whisky and wood. A warm fuzzy feeling spreads through the body after a sip of this beer and the tingle lasts a long time on the way home from the beer festival :-)
