Over eons and through civilisations, women had brewed beer as naturally as they baked and nurtured their families. In recent centuries though, a woman’s role within the brewing craft had changed. Old fashioned societal norms and industrialisation had turned women away from being the natural brewers of beer. In modern times things have been changing and thankfully the world is different now; the new age of the Brewster is dawning.
After equipping herself with a Masters degree in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot Watt in 1989, Sara was to join the tiny band of female pioneers working in the brewing world and then in time she took the step to lead her own brewing company.
Sara took the name Brewsters for the brewery as it was an old English word for a female brewer. In the mid nineteen nineties when Brewster’s brewery was started it was a term seldom used or even understood.
Brewster’s brewery is now a 32 hectolitre (or 20bbl if you are old school) single infusion brewhouse located in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Cask conditioned ales predominate but brewery conditioning is developing to be an important element for the brewery and allows other beer styles such as kegged beers and canned small pack to develop. The small batch size gives scope for great variety in styles.

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 25 April 2008) Mahogany colour with brief, off-white head. Malty nose with dark fruit and chocolate. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dark fruit and prunes. Fairly sweet, but still a nice beer.

Orange color. Aroma has malt and some green apple, a little oxidation. Very dry flavor with mild English hops. It might be a little old, but is is OK.

Cask at The Market Porter, London. Mild hop aroma. Coppery color with a whiteish head. Medium body. Floral hop over light caramel or biscuit. Carbonation hardly noticeable. Towards the finish hop turns a bit grapefruity. Brew also turns a bit watery.

White patch at the surface. Some laceworks on the glass. Deep brown body. Vagues smell of fresh fruits. Fruit-malty flavour leading to a moderate bitter end. Diluted mouthfeel (half, cask at Market Porter, 01.05.2008).

Half liter bottle (bottle conditioned!). Slightly sour citric aroma. A belgian? Less than clear amber tinged gold color with a decent white head. Medium body with fizzy carbonation - but soft carbonation. It’s a bit lactic. Earthy. Must be interesting hop, cause there’s a fair amount of bitter. The sour smooths into the finish. It’s now that the fruity ESB comes forth to balance against some roasted malt. But such a strange journey to get there. As consumption continues, the sour works out, and becomes a background thing. Wicked it is.

Cask gravity at Nottingham BF 2007. Amber colour with lasting off white head. Very fruity beer, must be the most fruity non fruit beer I’ve had. Peach and apricot. Good hop on end. Lovely fruit, in good condition and just as lovely as the call girl that the beer is named after.
