Description
Arkell’s Brewery was established in 1843 by John Arkell and 175 years later, is one of less than thirty family breweries remaining in the UK. As Swindon’s oldest business, Arkell’s has kept its founding values alive and continues to produce local beer for local customers. These values have been continued by the four family members in charge today; Chairman James Arkell, his cousin Nick Arkell, Head of Sales, and James’ sons George Arkell, and Alex Arkell are Managing Director and Head Brewer respectively.

Cask at Picture house, Stafford. Pours a dark copper with a large foamy off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is mainly malts with some hints of autumn fruits. Those two are the mainstays in the mouth as well, plus traces of treacle, butterscotch and ginger. Finish is slightly spicy. This is OK, but not very exciting. May need a rerate though, as it was served too cold.

500ml bottle. Pours brown, small off-white head, thin retention. Aroma of toffee malts, raisins, sweetness. Light to moderate body and low carbonation. Taste is very malty, sweet but not overbearing, lots of caramel, stone fruits, some nuts, moderate chewy raisin and bitter finish. Overall its nice if a bit one dimensional.

As still WFH and I likle the stats am adding on historical ticks. When the brewery first opened they were giving away samples at a local garden centre, where I tried this. PoW, Farnborough.

Keg pint into a plastic glass in Bar 71, inside Swindon Town's stadium on 22nd Feb 2020. We lost 3-1 by the way! Cold and amber, white head. Caramel notes in both the aroma and taste, once it warmed a little. Semi-sweet throughout.

Bottle from Ocado. Sweet marzipan aroma. Light brown. Frothy off-white head is gone too soon. Medium sweet with a sour edge. Underlying maltiness. Spice. Medium. Slick. Average carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. After an initial 'this is OK', I then found it was really sickly. Not for me. Didn't finish the glass.
