Cask at the Great Western. Wolverhampton. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin white head. Nice hoppy medium bitter flavour with a liqourice bitter finish.

First pub beer of RB Black Country Beer Bus Bash; Cask at Great Western Wolves, golden amber pour, sweet malt aroma, slightly fruity taste with a bitter finish.

Cask, one-third pint, on a sample tray at the pub called Roscoe Head. Clear amber coloured body, fragile white layer leaving spotty lacing down the glass. Rather modest aroma of bread-like malts together with floral hops. Jam like taste of juicy malts and dried fruits. Bittersweet tail. Satisfying bitter (Liverpool, 07.04.2013).

Cask (gravity) @ The 18th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2012, Reading, Berkshire England.Clear medium yellow orange colour with a average, frothy and open, good to fair lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, fruity, caramel, riped fruit. Flavor is moderate sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration, riped fruit, malty. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120505]

Cask at the Victoria Inn, Rugby, 03/04/13. Light black with a decent sized beige head that retains well as a film. Nose is dark malt, hops, touch of tropical fruit, chocolate, leather. Taste comprises dark malt, chocolate, touch grapefruit and hoppy notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry in the finish. A decent mild. Has the recipe changed since I last had it (10 + years ago)? It seemed to carry a lot of hops and grapefruit, like a thinned down black IPA! Great stuff.

Bottle at home, 08/03/13, thanks to SP. Pours a dark mahogony brown with a tan head that quickly dissipates to nothing other than a few bubbles. Nose is dark malts, treacle toffee, nutty tones, cocoa, brown sugars. Taste comprises dark malts, molasses, treacle toffee, brown sugars, toasted almond, rye bread. Medium body with prickly carbonation, a little overcooked for this style and detracting from the overall enjoyment a little, dry finish. Drinkable but lower mid table in the Barley Wine stakes for me.

Part of the ’World Leaders’ series of beers this brewery is brewing this year (2013). Hand-pulled pint in a local pub on 28 Feb 2013. Holdens have brewed light golden beers for years and this one follows that tradition: so golden in colour, bright and with a full white head on top, typical of a West Midlands/Black Country light coloured brew. The smell was a nice blend of hops and malts, floral, yet biscuity also. The taste was also a mixture of flavours with the sweeter malts taking centre stage at the front: the drier hop content arriving as the malts subsided in strength towards the end of each sip. Easy drinking and well balanced: the 4.5% ABV was well hidden within the brew and although I’m not a huge fan of UK blonde/golden beers usually, this was fine.

Gravity dispense at the 23rd Battersea Beer Festival - 06/02/13. Clear pale golden with a thin bubbly white head. Nose carries pale malt, tea leaves, light caramel. Taste comprises summer fruits, light hops, pale malt. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. Ok - an average bitter. Perhaps it doesnt travel well as this wasn’t a patch on the dozens of pints I sank of this beer when I lived in Wolverhampton in the late 90’s/early 00’s - or just as likely my changing palate !
