Description
It’s too easy to let life become predictable and settle for the ordinary. Luckily though, Orchard Pig is no ordinary cider. It all began in a Somerset shed, surrounded by the best West Country apple trees and free roaming Old Spot pigs. But, whilst every orchard has apples, not every orchard has Old Spot pigs. We believe our free-spirited attitude is the magic ingredient which makes every pint of Orchard Pig taste so refreshingly different to all the rest. Not your average apples, not your average pig. Orchard Pig. It’s a rare breed.

Draught @ Euston tap. No head. Sweet at first then turns bitter with a nice natural apple taste in the after taste.

Cask at Secklow Hundred (JDW), Milton Keynes. Yellow/straw, only slightly hazy. Smells of apples, lime and of couse a bit of ginger. Taste is overtaken by ginger, which is pleasant but hardly engaging. Spicy ginger aftertaste. The chilli is present but hidden in the spiciness. While I prefer this ginger cider to most ginger beers, it’s not really my thing.

500ml bottle from Bier Huis. Clear yellow golden colour, short-lived thin bubbly white head and aroma of tart apple, apple skins, woody, barnyard. Taste is fruity apple, apple skins, vanilla, bittersweet, nicely rounded with some light barnyard and tannin. Slightly oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, low to medium carbonation, dry sourish light tannic finish. Very drinkable cider.

50cl bottle from the Haymarket. Appearance - golden with steady bubbles and no head. Nose - dry tart apples. Taste - more of the same. Palate - medium bodied with a tight tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - very refreshing. A change to get a bone dry cider these days.

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Wetherspoon Cider Festival. Slightly hazy, yellow with a small greenness. It’s aroma and taste include plenty of apple, the ginger is not too evident but the spice is moderate and very pleasant as well as lingers in the palate. Excellent cider.

On tap at Cider Tap, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is quite funky and wild, with horse blanket dominating. Flavour is lightly funky, with medium-high sweetness and a little funk. High drinkability despite the sweetness. Very good.

Draught @ The Fox, Dalston. Pours clear gold, fairly sweet verging-on-sour apple taste with a dry finish. A touch too tart and sweet for me.

Draught @ Cider Tap. Pours cloudy yellow. Tastes very much like ginger beer, which wasn’t what I was expecting at all. The ginger’s fairly strong and the chili provides a light tang much like any decent ginger beer, the alcohol hidden behind it all rather well. Very refreshing summer drink, not sure if it can be classed as a cider tho!
