Description
In 2013, Oakwell Brewery of Barnsley, announced their closure. Oakwell’s legendary Barnsley Bitter faced extinction, along with 120 years of brewing heritage.

Motivated by a desire to ensure that the production of Oakwell’s famous Barnsley Bitter could continue, Barnsley boys Tom & Adam rescued the brewing equipment from Oakwell and set about recreating the much loved beer.

A site in Sheffield was selected as the home of the new brewery. Known as the ‘Brewing Capital of England’, the city’s proximity to the Peak District gives access to the purest water - perfect for brewing. The 22.5 barrel kit was carefully transported to the new location and painstakingly reassembled under the direction of Chief Engineer, Tim.

Stancill Brewery was ready to brew.

Production commenced in January 2014 with a revival of the historic Barnsley Bitter, true to the original recipe. Led by Head Brewer Dean, our brewery team work hard to ensure that the legacy continues to this day.

Can. Turner’s, Sheffield. Light gold. Soft haze. Thick, rocky, foamy, lasting, white head. Nose has pale malts. Lemon rind. Pithy grapefruit. Taste is dry and pithy bitter. Mouthfeel is oily, with high carbonation. Long bitter finish. It’s punchy bitter, certainly, but it’s not too drinkable. Lacks some balance.
