Description
In 2013, Oakwell Brewery of Barnsley, announced their closure. Oakwell’s legendary Barnsley Bitter faced extinction, along with 120 years of brewing heritage.

Motivated by a desire to ensure that the production of Oakwell’s famous Barnsley Bitter could continue, Barnsley boys Tom & Adam rescued the brewing equipment from Oakwell and set about recreating the much loved beer.

A site in Sheffield was selected as the home of the new brewery. Known as the ‘Brewing Capital of England’, the city’s proximity to the Peak District gives access to the purest water - perfect for brewing. The 22.5 barrel kit was carefully transported to the new location and painstakingly reassembled under the direction of Chief Engineer, Tim.

Stancill Brewery was ready to brew.

Production commenced in January 2014 with a revival of the historic Barnsley Bitter, true to the original recipe. Led by Head Brewer Dean, our brewery team work hard to ensure that the legacy continues to this day.

Cask at CPK, Pimlico on 14th January 2026. Deep inky sepia black with a pale tan foam and full lacing. Velvety roastiness in aroma. Coffee, bitter chocolate, aniseed and candied fruits in-mouth and a roasty malt finish that grows bitter. Aniseed line persists. Emgaging mouthfeel and a fair amount of body. Interesting and enjoyable.

Dark opaque brown. Thin frothy foamy beige head. Aroma is spicy- almost Indian quisine-esque. Flavourwise it's bitter with a light spicy streak. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish.

The barman was hoping I didn't order this one, there's not much left in the barrel of this once a year brew and he wants to get a last one in after his shift ends! I can see why, it's smooth, crisp, good-looking and flavoursome. The parkin element isn't particularly stated, but its dark-maltiness is very good.

25 years ago this very month I first set foot in Bavaria. Not much cask lager found there though, this is a fair effort for the style, and very smooth in the palate. Its hop are appealing enough without being too flavoursome.

Deep straw / pale gold with a frothy / creamy white head and a soft fruity aroma. Light creamy smooth, biscuit malt and gooseberry bitterness leads to a dry finish.
