Traditional ale that stands up well against the designer styles. Dark ruby coloured ale, lacks a decent head but its mild sweet character makes up for it. Medium bodied with a medium bitterness.

Cold served clear golden ale. Full bodied with small head. Has a very mild pale aroma and character in its taste but also malty. Mainly a bitterness for flavour.

Cask (handpump) @ Southampton Arms, 139 Highgate Road, London, Greater London, England NW5 1LE.Clear medium to dark amber orange colour with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, nutty, earthy. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, nutty, caramel, dry. Body is light to medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120803]

Cask (handpump) @ NWAF 2012, National Winter Ales Festival, The Venue, Sheridan Suite, Manchester, England.Clear medium amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, nutty, fruity, earthy. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120119]

Cask at Penderels Oak, JDW, London. Pours rich gold with a tight, white foam head. Light toasted, doughy malts in the nose, some dirty hay. Medium sweet flavor, some drying lemon, sugar, faint woody leaves. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Moderately dry to finish, some toast, leaves and light grass, dry citrus, mild toast. Pretty average stuff.

Cask at the William Webb Ellis (JDW), Twickenham - 15/12/12. Clear pale golden with a thin white head that retains well. Nose is pale malts, touch of citrus, caramel malt. Taste follows nose with mineral tones, sugars. a little musty, orange, a touch vegetal, light smoke. Medium bodied with light carbonation leading to a bitter finish. Pretty average.

Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoons on 11 Dec 2012. Slightly disappointed with this to be honest: not a Christmas or Pud feel to the brew at all. Pours a golden amber colour, mine had an off-white head that left some lacing on my glass, but it wasn’t ’ore inspiring’ in looks and presentation. The nose was weak and earthy with just a single flower ester to give it a floral hint. The taste was equally as weak and nondescript: bland and uninteresting are the best two words that come to mind. I was expecting a Christmassy explosion of flavours but all I got was a smooth blend of normal ingrediants that didn’t inspire or excite. Nothing actually wrong with the brew: it just wasn’t a Christmas Pudding sort of beer.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Straw with a thin cream head; aroma of sour grains; sharp grassy bitter taste with a grainy body, some sweetness; and a lingering bitterness to finish. Not bad.
