Description
Brewing ceased in April 2022. A Shropshire brewery has shut due to "unfavourable trading conditions".

The Wood Brewery was founded by Edward Wood, his brother and his father in the outbuildings of the Plough Inn in Wistanstow, Shropshire in 1980. Wood’s was one of the founding members of the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) and a firm supporter of CAMRA. At a time when there was a surge of keg beer companies flooding the market and threatening the existence of traditional English ale, Wood’s championed the traditionally brewed product and ensured it remained a firm favourite in the county.

Wood’s has been at the forefront of Shropshire brewing since then and continues to be after it was taken over by new owners in 2018. The new owners have worked with the existing team to make a range of impactful and progressive changes to the brewing process and quality control, to ensure that Wood’s beer is of the highest possible quality. By continuing to make consistent and innovative products, the brewery can remain successful in an increasingly crowded market place.

Cask @ Paramount, Manchester. Very dark, but not quite black, with a creamy off-white head. Feels a little thin and has some porter characteristics for it. Washy and soapy in its texture, there’s a very light roasted malt behind this, also with a floralness.

Hand-pulled half-pint at The Cock Hotel, Wellington: shared with Gene on his Shropshire Day, 5th Oct 2015. Clear golden pour with a full white head. Mild citrus nose and flavour, some malt action within the taste. In really good condition, like almost every we beer we had on the day. Decent enough blend but so like a host of similar beers on the UK market at the moment. Pleased we tried it though, as it looks like it is a ’one off’ brew.

Hand-pulled half-pint as a cask ale night-cap on 1st Oct 2015 at the Crown Inn Oakengates Shropshire. Expected a bit more body and depth of flavour than I got. Black bodied brew with a tanned topping. Mild coffee and chocolate notes in both the nose and taste but lacked strength or character, slight smoky undertones, but again only a hint rather than a full blown, brave plunge into an exciting experiment or boundary pushing style.
