From a 440ml can on 7/9/2024. Pours a deepest brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is sweet and malty - light caramel, toffee and stewed fruit. It does have a barleywine/stout aspect to it, with a touch of stout roastiness and coffee presenting in the background. But the barleywine side is dominant - again caramel, toffee, dark and dried fruit. Sweetish up front with nice countering bitterness. The palate is lightly syrupy, the carbonation moderate. Actually quite subtle in some ways for such a big beer, but really satisfying.

From a 440ml can on 13/8/2024. Pours a super deep amber with a medium to biggish head. Smells of citrus, with some bready and nutty malt and some pine and resin. Taste is reasonably sweet up front with citrus and stone fruit, caramel, rye bread, nuts and light coffee. Finishes firmly bitter, with more pine and resin, lingering long after the sip. Silky mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. You can tell it's big, but maybe not 10%. Has great length and balance, with a lot going on flavour wise. Very impressive.

Can. Darkish brown with a 3/2 cm beige head. Aroma of nectarines, oranges, mocha, bread, pine. Medium bodied. Sweet with some caramel before oozing fruity flavours, mocha & roast, then pine and firmish bitterness. At that point where you wonder whether it's a bit strong for what it offers or whether alcohol is well hidden.

440mL can, pours a deep dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma has plenty of medium roasted malt, earthiness, and gentle hops. Flavour has medium roasted malt, a healthy hop dose, and light cocoa. The body is on the lighter side for a RIS, but the roasted malt and hop characters are integrated very well. Very good.

Can (Harold's). Fairly cloudy amber with a small white head. Aroma of kumquat, tropical bubblegum, pine needles, bread. And whilst the taste follows, it seems both more softly & generously arrayed before a moderately bitter finish.

Can. Just slightly unclear amber with a near cm of white head. Aroma of kumquat, some grapefruit, bread. The Sabro shows itself a little upon a swig, softening the citrus with some coconut. Drifts into moderate bitterness. OK, doesn't offer a whole lot for its strength.

Can. Pale amber with a good inch of white head. Low key earthy aroma with some tired orange, peach, woody pine and spices. Light bread under a hop and rye feel that gently asserts itself until it tails off gradually with medium high finishing bitterness. Another sophisticated hoppy beer from Hawkers.
