Hand-pulled half-pint in The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham on 30 Aug 2013. Rich dark brown/black in colour with a full and deep beige head of foam. Intense vanilla aroma and taste: name gives it away somewhat. I found it sweet and most enjoyable, the body being very smooth and creamy. Coffee notes came through from the heavy malt content and it had a semi-bitter finish to each sip.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham during Black Country Bus Tour. Pours deep brown with a modest, lightly foamy beige head. Milk chocolate aroma. Light to medium sweet flavor with tar, more milk chocolate, some burnt malts, dirt. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate sweetness to finish, lightly roasty with a bit more milk chocolate character. Easygoing and pretty tasty.

Cask at the Wellington, Brum, last cask offering of the RB Black country bus bash in the Midlands (there was one more to follow at the Euston Tap!). Pitch black with a thin light tan head. Nose is light roast, vanilla, chocolate, sugars. Taste comprises chocolate, light roast, hint of vanilla, dark toffee. Medium to light in body, a little thin for 5%+. Ok stuff let down by its body as much as anything.

Cask at The Hop. Pours dark brown with a reddish hue, good thick-cream head. Nutty caramel aroma. Tastes prominently of chocolate, and a bit too much sweetness on the finish - some hop bitterness cutting through would really improve this. A beer for a winter’s day, not summertime.

Tap at The Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany colour with a thin round off-white head. The aroma is roasted malt leading to a medium bitter, liqourice, malty flavour. I sadly didn’t get the chocolate at all. Back to the drawing board guys!

Cask @ Crown and Kettle, Manchester. Dry tasting stout, very black, no head, has a full roasted aroma with coffees evident. its flavour is lighter but with the same tastes evident.

On cask @ Coach and Horses, Dronfield - nice golden body, creamy white head, fragrant nose. Hints of citrus and floral, a bit of coriander too. Good body, and great on a day like this. (Warm and sunny by the way!)

Cask at The Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a clear light amber with a broken white head. The aroma is of malt and a little fruit. The flavour is weak bitter, malty on the palate and hoppy, but the bitter aftertaste isn’t so pleasant and it stays around for longer than I’d like. I would not order a second pint.
