Description
It all began with a 27 year old brewer, a windowless apartment, and a mountain of credit card debt. Phillips’ first brews were about as unconventional as his financing structure. In the conservative beer climate of 2001 the brewery launched with an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a boldy-hopped IPA; a suitable foreshadow for the creativity to come.

Since then Phillips has moved out of the apartment and into a more brewing-appropriate facility (with windows) closer to town. We have launched a soda company, a distillery, and most recently a malting facility–the only one of its kind in Canada.

Clearish gold with a decent white head. Candied citrus. Candied citrus and a dry finish. A bit sweet and dry, but not very traditional.

Cloudy yellow with a decent white head. Perfumy wheat notes and a touch of dirt. Orange and nice creamy wheat notes. Not bad, but just not a style I like.

Can. Somewhat hazy deep gold with a good inch of white head that lasts well. Aroma of grapefruit, weeds, some tropical boiled lollies. Texture is a bit creamy. A bit of a sugary dough backing to the fruity and bitter hops. Not the balance you’d expect for a NEIPA (not that it appears to claim to be one) and fairly rough and ready but tasty enough.

473mL can, pours black with a medium beige head. Nose brings out lots of bready malt with maybe a touch of faded coffee. Flavour is a little more interesting, with bready malt, some gentle fruitiness, and a touch roast. Very bready and gently fruity finish. It's alright, but pretty meh overall.

Hazy golden-orange colour with a big cream-frothy warm off-white head, with great retention and thick waves of creamy-foamy lacing. Looks beautiful. Aromas from the hops are not only giving me some grassiness, but lots of those raisin notes. Fruity, juicy with hints of alcohol. Some citrus comes out a little to balance out things. Looks like might have some Green Bullet hops in here, as raisins are still present, with the citrus, juiciness and decent bitterness. This hop from NZ is not my fav, but in here, seems to blend the juicy citrus Hazy IPA and give you something a tad different, which is still drinkable. Solid overall.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Bright and clean golden to amber colour, small head. Gentle aroma of sugars and malt, lightly floral on the nose. Good body strength, some residual sugars, but well balanced by the bold bitterness; the malt is bready and biscuity, the hop is resinous, light pine, light coloured caramel. It's clean, not as bright as a fully modern IPA, but it's well brewed.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Bright and clean golden to amber colour, small head. The aroma here changes completely from the Moutere and Centennial, delicate dankness and orange that mingles with the malt. Mildly sweet, some caramel flavour, but gentle; nice hop character, dancing between the resinous and the dank, some fresh orange peel; the bitterness is balanced, it seems slightly less than in the Moutere and Centennial. It's clean, not as bright as a fully modern IPA, but it's well brewed.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Bright and clean golden to amber colour, small head. Very light malt and fruit in the aroma. Mild malt and caramel flavour, balanced bitterness, the hop character seems more timid and boring than any of the 3 components. It's clean, not as bright as a fully modern IPA, but it's well brewed.
