Description
It all began with a 27 year old brewer, a windowless apartment, and a mountain of credit card debt. Phillips’ first brews were about as unconventional as his financing structure. In the conservative beer climate of 2001 the brewery launched with an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a boldy-hopped IPA; a suitable foreshadow for the creativity to come.

Since then Phillips has moved out of the apartment and into a more brewing-appropriate facility (with windows) closer to town. We have launched a soda company, a distillery, and most recently a malting facility–the only one of its kind in Canada.

Soft roasty nose, soft pine resin hops with some leafy, fresh cut grass. Soft carb, and a velvety mouth feel. This beer is subtle, and smooth. It had an overall softness about it. All the components of a good black ipa are there, but it lacks bite. The alcohol is very well hidden, and the bitterness is about medium, and not over the top. Subtle cocoa notes in the finish with a nice routines and some pine to round it out.

Hazy yellow pour, with a huge white head. Aroma of herbs, tea, and green, herbacious citrusy hops. Light mouth feel, good carb. Medium bitterness with more herbs, and subtle tartness with some greeen leagy hops. Quenching and crisp with a clean finish, nice beer.

Light brown pour small beige head. Light and bready aroma, light cereals, and some subtle UK hops. Lightly pungent, and very soft. Some good aromas abd flavours, but everything seems quite soft. A nice quaff, easily drinkable, low bitterness, with a solid nutty, UK hop finish.

A punch in the face of fresh ginger root, and lemon aromas. Lots of soft herbs, subtle citrus, and earthy ginger round out the flavors. Low bitterness, and a warming heat finish from the ginger. Refreshing, but i could do without the heat in the end.

thanks to mgermani for the bottle!
pitch black, oil, thick pour, small tan head. Aroma roasted malt, dark fruit, burnt chocolate, and some hops. Flavour is smoky, and very very roasty, some burnt soy, and burnt chocolate, decent bittering in the finish. A good impy stout, not amazing, but good.

hmm......most of the other ratings are saying it pours a hazy amber.......mine is quite clear, and yellow. anyways......nice head, great lacing on my glass. Nose is a little thin on the hops, they are there, but not as pronounced as i like in an IPA. Nice carbonation, and here we go, the hops are present in the flavour. Nice citrus notes, and a good amount if bittering in the finish. Not too shabby! A very good everyday solid IPA.

smells great! lots of chocolate inthe aroma, very sweet, and nice.
Body is quite thin, and watery. Flavour is pretty watery also, and very thin, from that aroma you would expect something thick. aftertaste is like a big whiff of cocoa powder. Flavour doesnt live up to the aroma. A nice try, but pretty thin.

Great mix of a porter, and an IPA.
Wonderful chocolate/smokiness of a porter, but at the end you get that great butterness of an IPA, great beer.

Can from Beer Republic. Malty aroma with caramel, stewed fruits, and toffee. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium. Inoffensive and unremarkable malty ale, not bad.
