Cask, Oak and Saw, Taplow. Dark amber colour, no real head. Aroma is pretty gross - woody, sulphrous, festering ashtrays. Flavour isn’t much better, staleish, with some malt and a slightly bitterish finish. Insipid and frankly naff beer.

[On cask at the Rising Sun, Reading] I never really liked the Brakspear flavour, even when they were independent (we used to refer to them as BreakWind as their beers could be a little sulphurous!). The takeovers by Wychwood and subsequently Marstons seem to have managed to keep Brakspears surprisingly true to its original taste - which unfortunatley, means I still don’t think much of it. This beer is undoubtedly citrus-y, but unfortunately the citrus aspect they’ve chosen to highlight is a horrible sour aftertaste. Rather dry and watery, there’s not a lot to redeem this. It’s a shame, for there are some excellent organic beers out there (eg Shep’s Whitstable Bay) and beers like this will do the organic movement no favours at all.

500 ml bottle. Floral aroma. Dark copper color with a white head that left immediately. Thin to medium in body with slightly fizzy carbonation. Tangy, fruity hop over bready malt. Finishes sweetish, but is balanced by the tangy hop. You should try it.

[on draught in The Rising Sun, Reading] Rich, very earthy, a hint of fruit but an unpleasant bitter metallic aftertaste. I’ve never been a fan of Brakspear beers, despite having spent many of my beer-drinking years in their catchment area. Their move from Henley to the Wychwood brewery in Witney doesn’t seem to have helped, and this seasonal special has done nothing to improve my opinion of the brand in general.

Bottle, Asda, Manchester. Dark golden colour. Vaguely floral, citrus aroma. Some hoppiness in the flavour. Quite smooth. Lacks real punch though and slightly metallic aftertaste lets it down at the end. Can’t quite see why this has so many good ratings. Average at best.
