Description
After a great reception from his hobby as an enthusiastic amateur brewer, Toby Mackenzie and his wife Caroline decided to expand and go full time establishing the award winning Red Willow brewery in 2010. Their aim was to make the types of beer that they like - full of flavour yet easy to drink. Red Willow now offer a range of beers that can be found in many local pubs and shops in cask

Bottle at home, a couple of days past expiry date. Aroma is piny hops, strong pine resin, herbal and spicy notes, mint, touch of liquorice, roasted malt. Flavour is light sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Not your typical Black IPA, bit awkward actually, with the mint and herbal notes, strong carbonation, not bad but a bit messy.

Half cask at the Kelham Island Tavern. Golden pour with a creamy white head. Aroma is grainy, cereal, mildly sweet. Taste is sweet, silky, grainy, bready, with some drying at the finish.

Can at home. Aroma is zesty citrus, lemon, pale malt, citrussy hops, orange. Flavour is lightly sweet and moderate bitter. Body is medium. Loads of zesty citrus, lemon, citrussy hops with a light pale malt backbone. Crisp and citrussy, I dig.

Last time I had a beer at Victoria Tap I encountered an apologetic lady for overtaking my table whilst at the bar ordering a second brew. One visit later I just stood at the bar for this one. Golden, carbonated, full-bodied, very good west Coast styling. Gritty, fruity, sugars, excellent head.

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 21st January 2025. Slightly hazy amber with shallow of-white foam and full lacing. Nutty malts ant tangy citrus fruitiness in aroma. Burst of tangy fruits in-mouth with savoury transient and hint of salt. A fruity finish that turns a little pithy late. Enjoyable.
Light bodied with a smooth mouthfeel.

Hand-pulled half-pint in the Blue Boar, Leicester mid-afternoon on 21st January 2025. No hop mentioned on the pump clip, so it's this one, right? Clear golden amber body, snow white crown. Mosaic hops doing their thing and giving this beer a citrussy flavour and aroma, grapefruit to the fore. Some malt sweetness for balance.
