Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a hazy medium brown color with a small dark tan head. The aroma was sweetish, hoppy and tangy with grapefruit and a bit of alcohol showing through. The flavor was sweet, tangy and tart with spritzy fruity and piney hops and a long bitter fruity hop finish. Very thick. Very nice.

On tap at the East End Brewery. Got a nice big sample while filling a growler of it for puzzl. Cloudy lightish beige or brown like a hazey Long Island iced tea. Beatiful big head! Taste is of old farm house or barn with background hints of old sour wet hay. At times I think I smell a little old wet hay and manure mix in there and this is not meant to be derrogatory in any way. I must admit, I never tasted horse or goat manure but had my face rubbed in it a few times and this stuff has all the positve attributes of said matter. At times I think there are hints of smoked goat cheese in there. This brew is unique and a positive experience on all accounts. A really good tasting session brew. Light and airy, beautiful and fun. Nice finish, like a confederate gentleman greeeting a southern colonial bell. Lovely, simply lovely! Not a single hint of bitterness!

On tap at the Marzoni’s in Allison Park near Pittsburgh. Big glass for $2.75. Pour is rolling at first, giving the appearance of the pour of some nitro stouts. That however, settles to a clear lighter iced tea color with an interesting head that has various size bubbles, everything from tiny to large. The aroma is quite yeasty. Mind you, I’ve smelled yeasty before but this stuff is very yeasty, actually smells like the cake yeast my mom used to use for homemade bread. On the taste buds it’s quite interesting. Malty with a little alky showing thru. Not as alky as the 6+% would indicate, but its there peeking it’s little english bald head up above the flavors. Very light and smooth carbonation that can barely be detected. On the finish; there is a lasting linger of medium medicinal bitterness that hangs around like a visitor thats worn out it’s his welcome. A little too bitter on the finish for this lager lover but an excellent brew to the style none the less.

Recently had this too, at the RBtasting 2009. On tap at the Marzoni’s in Allison Park near Pittsburgh. Very nice beery aroma, sweet without the hint of alky strongness. Ubiquitous pale yellow color and appearance. Swirling carbonation visible within. Has a very slight haze. Friendly and light on the taste buds after the session begins but during the commencement I thought I had an inkilng of bitterness on the palate. Below avrage carbonation. Good finish, well mannered and not offensive in the least. Not bad Marzoni! Nice session brew even tho it is above 5%, you’d never know it.

On tap at the Allison park Marzoni’s. Really nice blueberry fragrance and it’s surprisingly tart on the olfactory. Ubiquitous color, like any other american pale ale. there is no indicator in the color that this is blueberry. Not a whole lotta blueberry on the tongue, but it’s there. Neither sweet nor wheatish nor sour on the palate. has some ale attributes, this makes it a touch bitter. Overall, not offensive on the back of the throat and it does not linger. Not bad for a bock, but is it a bock at 4.6%?

Quite dark, like very dark root beer. Decent clean beer aroma, has a bit of roastiness on the olfactory. Taste of course, is a bit strong at +7%, but it’s not over the top like many other doppels. Background hints of hay and slag, in a good way. Malty alky palate but not offensive. A friendly entry in the doppel bock style and overall not bad. Finish is not as oppressive as I was anticipating. Short mild bitter ending.

I’m not good enough to rate this beer and out of respect for my beer rating pals; Nate and mJ, I’m a little nervous about doing so. They know I rate on enjoyability and not by style and I usually don’t like the palate of high ABV% beers. Mike would probably ask me why I would try it if I knew I didn’t like it and of course my reply is ’it was there, I was there and I hadn’t tried it yet’. On tap at the Marzoni’s in Allison Park, Pittsburgh. Slightly fruity aroma with tart hints. As that peculiar sweet smell that alarms me of a high ABV% beer to follow. There is the typical wheat spice aroma in there too. Slightly cloudy pale yellow like a good hefe or witbier. No carbonation per se. I was a little apprehensive about trying an imperial wheat for fear it would be too much for my lager loving taste buds, even tho wheat and wit is one of my most favored styles. This brew provides a strong alky impact on the palate. It’s just too much for my girlie taste buds. I’m not really sure if this can be classified as a beer, more like wine or barley wine to me. Overall, this taste experience is just what I expected. More personality than I care for. However, I bet many of you will love it and it has a special purpose niche that it can satisfy. Keep in mind if you read this, I’m not a beer expert and I rate by cheapdark enjoyability, not by style. This is an excellent example of this style!

On tap at the Marzoni’s in Allison Park, Pittsburgh. Has a good roasty aroma with a background that is reminiscent of fresh J&L slag or permanent hair treatment my mom used to use when I was a kid. Darker looking brown and hazy, somewhat like dark iced tea. Mild carbonation that borders on creamy. Well mannered and friendly flavor with a little bitterness that is difficult to identify. Not bad for a darker brew but it could be a little more well behaved. Would not know this is 4% or less in ABV. Has flavor attributes that make me think it is much higher. Mild to medium bitter builds on the back of the throat and hangs for a while after the session, tho not really offensive, just enough to let you know it’s beer.

On tap at the Marzoni’s in Allison PArk, near Pittsburgh. Pour is dirty brown in color with a slight haze. Thin head. Has a unique earthy aroma about it. The bouquet is like freshly plowed dirt or gravel, in a nice way. I think I detect permanent hair treatment odors too. These aromas carry over to the taste and initially lead to a really interesting palate experience. Good carbonation for a tap, friendly and attention getting. Taste is not bitter at first but some slight mettalic bitterness does begin to manifest itself on the back of the palate. Does not possess much of the ’fest’ flavors that I normally detect with other marzens or octoberfest beers, and I’m glad of it. Some medium industrial bitterness on the finish hangs for a while after the session. Decent fest entry.

Ubiquitous pale yellow american lager color. Smells a little sweet and vinegary. Taste is definately pilsner bitter. Refined pilsner style hop bitterness. Not ale hops, mind you, pilsner lager hops. Mild carbonation. A little more bitterness than this lager lover can appreciate. Lingering processed pilsner bitterness on the finish. Wants to be an ale.
