Description
In late 2013, J.C. Hill got a call from his father, John, asking if he’d like to open a brewery restaurant in Monterey. The opportunity to collaborate on a project with his father and move home to Northern California to start a family with his wife, Melanie, could not be ignored and thus he moved. Located in a historically registered building in Old Monterey, this is our original location that opened in 2014. The Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill serves locally sourced, gastropub-influenced fare built around it's beers that are produced on-site.

In April of 2016 our Salinas Production Brewery & taproom opened to supplement house offerings at our downtown Monterey pub, and allow us to supply draft beer to quality minded local establishments.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated September 12, 2024. Aroma is super fruity and hop forward with lots of passion fruit, guava, gooseberry, lychee and tropical citrus. Lighter dank, oily resin notes. Light cracker malt and alcohol notes. Pours a hazy, dull, golden straw color with a medium large, thick, fluffy, white head that recedes to the edges where it lingers. Moderately high lacing and small legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with light cracker malt notes. Medium bitterness and light alcohol notes. Fairly strong juicy hop notes. Lots of passion fruit, guava, lychee, gooseberry and tropical citrus. Hints of stone fruit and dank, oily resin notes. Dank hop notes longer a bit into the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a great hazy IPA. A bit sweet in the malt notes, but the hops are on point. This is the exact hop profile, both in flavor and aroma that I enjoy. Such a great expression of New Zealand hops.

Poured up on tap at the Alvarado Street Bistro in Carmel where it exhibits a nice dark chocolate colored body that supports a thin mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up inviting chocolate then rum followed by a vanilla note thinly rimmed with nuttiness. The taste delivers smooth slick dark chocolate yum nuanced by booze and a smooth candy like rum note. Plum and date like sweet fruitiness seem intertwined in the rum. midway a blend of caramel and coconut bubble to the surface rounding out the experience. Great dessert sipper with terrific balance and soft supple barrel character.

16 oz. can, pours a clear bright golden with a large white head. Aroma is dominated by divine Nelson: tons of white wine, tangy hops, lots of pine, and a touch of dank. Flavour is wonderfully bright, bitter and dank, with tons of tangy hops, lots of dankness, huge pine, and melon. Beautifully bright and masterfully hopped. Incredible.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated August 07, 2024. Aroma is fruit forward with a ton of mango. Hints of other tropical fruit and light dank, resin notes. Light cracker malt and alcohol notes. Pours a hazy, golden orange color with a medium large, medium thick, white head that recedes quickly to a very small thin film. No lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with light cracker malt notes. Medium high bitterness and light alcohol notes. Fairly high mango notes with hints of tropical fruit, citrus and dank, resin notes from the hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent fruited IPA but I'm not sure that I really like the mango fruit addition to the beer. The fruit overwhelms everything about the beer including the hops and malt.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated August 15, 2024. Aroma is hop forward and fruity with lots of melon, stone fruit, passion fruit and guava notes. Lighter dank, train and citrus notes. Light cracker malt and alcohol notes. Pours a hazy, dull, golden orange color with a medium sized, thick, fluffy, white head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers on the edges. Medium lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with light cracker malt notes. Medium bitterness and light alcohol notes. Moderately strong hop notes of peach, passion fruit, melon and guava. Lighter citrus and hints of dank resin. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid hazy IPA. Really fun, fruity hop aroma and flavor with a ton of melon character. Malt profile is a bit too much on the sweet side, but the alcohol is well hidden and bitterness is light. It's just a bit too sweet for me, but that's probably what pulls out the hop aromas.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated July 24, 2024. Aroma is very hop forward with lots of pineapple, grapefruit, guava, passion fruit and dank, oily resin. Light cracker malt notes and light alcohol notes. Pours a hazy, murky, dusty, golden straw color with a medium sized, thick, pillowy, white head that recedes steadily to the edges where it lingers. Moderate lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with light cracker malt notes. Medium bitterness and light alcohol notes. Lots of hop flavor with a ton of sweet citrus, pineapple, passion fruit, guava and melon. Lighter dank, resin notes. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol. Overall, a solid hazy IPA. The aroma had a hop bite that I expected to carry over into the flavor, but the flavor is a juicy, fruit bomb. Alcohol is decently hidden. Rather sweet and could use a touch more bitterness.
