This beer is a good example of what an ale could be. Very pretty beer, black liquid and choco moos head. Head fades rapidly. Plain old clean yeast aroma with nice lacing on the glass. Thin carbonation yet creamy on the palate. Malty milky feel on the tongue. No gunk on the bottom of the bottle. Dark wet roasted feel that is not offensive. Kind and forgiving to the taste bud. Mild laid back stout experince. Near end of session still interesting but going flat. Becomes like a black mild beer on nitro near the end. Some lingering roasted wood near the finish. I don’t like baltic porters but this stuff is freindly fine. Overall good beer experience.

Bottle: Bright golden pour with a creamy finger of white head. Aroma is dry and wheaty, floral, and lightly malty sweet. Initially good pilsener bite with a mix of yeast, florals, and breadiness. Finished with a crisp floral and dandelion ending. Not bad.

A dark brown beer. The Schell’s yeast is very perceivable in the flavor and aroma. Heavily roasted grains are the primary quality of this beer. Some lager yeast. I prefer the flavor while the beer is chilled, but the aroma opens up as it warms.

12 oz bottle purchased by my Dad at Zipps in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pour is black with ruby notes and a one inch light tan head. Head falls pretty quickly with minimal lacing. Aroma of slight roast, some grassy smoky tobacco. Faint, but clean nose. Taste is some of the roast of the nose up front, followed by a milkiness and leafiness. There is also a soft milk chocolate sweetness. Flavor like the nose is faint but clean. Palate is medium, lowish carbonation and a clean brief finish. The alcohol is not present until the very back of the finish. Nice enough.

Bottle from guerde. Thanks a bunch man. Pours really black with a few tan bubbles. Aroma of roasted malt. And treacally dark fruit. Near full bodied with mild, foamy carbonation. Flavor is dark fruits and dark malt, with I think a touch of coffee. Even chocolate. Pretty tasty stuff.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with a small creamy khaki head that lingered. The aroma was bitter curdled cream. The flavor was tangy, bitter, sour and lightly malty with notes of malted milk, marshmallow and curdled cream. Medium body but creamy. Lingering off flavors really detract. Eh.

12 oz. bottle from Hy-Vee in Storm Lake, sold in sampler with the "Schell’s Stout" label. Unusually for such a Deutschenzentric brewer to have a stout in its rotation, especially in summer. Solid black pour, with thin brown bubbles atop. Dark molasses smell, just sweet with no over-roast or astringency. Taste is quite smooth with just a little sourness in back, more citrus than Guinness. A nice strong taste, good finish.

12 oz. bottle. Golden pour, tinges of red highlight. Thin, steady head of lager foam. Sweet, malty smell. Nice malty taste, just a little bit thick, with an underlying touch of honey. Just enough German hops to lend notes of black pepper. Impressions of a whiskey & water, plus a little bit of red apple.

12 oz. bottle. 100th rating for this beer. Golden brass color. Pours gives it a thick head, with a bit of fluffy foam. German beer smell, but with a bit of age to it. Malty, toasty beer taste, finish is to the cleaner lager side. The touch of honey becomes more pronounced toward the bottom of the bottle, but does not become overly sweet. Instead, it’s well balanced by a noble hop profile.

12oz bottle. Filtered brown-orange color. Thin, but respectable head. Sweet medium-dark malt aroma, a touch of seawater. Smooth and sessionable, medium bodied. There is some faint, dry, sandy hop bitterness that helps to balance out the deep, sweet malt tones. Pretty well done, though certainly not world class. Lacks some depth, certainly.
