Description
We are George and Tom Jenkinson, brothers and directors of our family run brewery. Founded in 1980 by our father and mother, Richard and Lesley Jenkinson, we remain the oldest independent brewery in the Chiltern Hills and Buckinghamshire.

Located on an old working farm in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, the emphasis has always been to produce natural, wholesome beers using the best, class A malt and hops sourced in England. Our brewing process mirrors age-old methods and our beers are brewed with skill, passion and integrity. We have always been proud to support British farmers and all of our ingredients have a good provenance.

Cask at the Reading beer festival. Gold with a moderate white head. Dusty straw with moderate bitterness. Better than average light refresher, although pretty traditional and forgettable.

Bottle obtained from Chiltern Brewery’s own stand at the Thame Food Festival, after crossing the brewer’s hand with five pieces of gold. It pours a chestnut-brown rather than ruby, and is capped with a moderate but lasting creamy head and a light fizz. There’s port and general fruitiness up front, in a smooth, rich mouthfeel. The alcohol is evident, but works well with the beer and is not raw or harsh. Chocolate follows, with a hint of thyme and earth. It finishes with a growing roasty bitterness. It’s kind of halfway between a porter and a barley wine; tasty and sumptuous, yet traditional. Definitely CAMRA fare; they picked the right brewer for the job. But is it worth a fiver? Possibly not.

Pigs Ear. Wooden Cask. Hazy deep amber beer with a bubbly pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and semi dry. Modest fine carbonation. Mild malt with a whisper of toffee. Little dried fruits and very light hop. Light dry finish. A tasty little beer but unlike most of the other wooded cask beers at the festival, doesn’t seem to have picked up anything from the wood.
