Description
Barreled Souls Brewing Co. is owned and operated by Chris Schofield and Matthew Mills. Chris and Matt both grew up in Wells, ME and have been friends since the fourth grade. The idea of opening a brewery together came up many times over the years, usually while imbibing on some stellar examples of the craft. The conversation got serious in the summer of 2012 and two years later Barreled Souls was open for business.
Matt and Chris set out to create the kind of beers they would want to drink and the kind of brewery they would want to spend time at. This meant focusing on making a large variety of beers, using unique ingredients and processes paired with a large, comfortable and professionally run tasting room that carries 12 varieties on draft.
The brewery operates a fifty gallon brewing system. All of the beer produced at the brewery undergoes primary fermentation in oak barrels. The fermentation system is based off of the Burton Union system, which was a method of fermenting beer developed in England in the 1800’s. The benefits of this system are really three-fold.

16 oz can traded by Clarkvv, thanks buddy. Aroma is bold orange, pomegranate, and mild tequila. Flavor pops with pomegranate and some sweet orange. Moderate tequila finish. I am not a fan of tequila at all. That said, this has enough orange and pomegranate to make it extremely balanced.

16 oz can traded by Clarkvv, thanks buddy. Deep green color. Aroma is pineapple, lime, and soft passionfruit. Flavor follows with a pretty steady, soreness in the finish. I never had the Pukiki cocktail before. Very similar to a Blue Hawaiian cocktail.

500mL bottle shared at the brewery on 6/8/25.
Dark, drab cola-mahogany with some deep amber tones. Small, off-white head. Clear.
At first I thought it might be a bit oxidized, but after warming and breathing, it's really nothing more than what you would expect from a six year old beer. Nutty, a bit peppery, with bygone whiskey suggestions and light caramel. Vanilla, raisin and more peppery notes linger with a rather tired, but still cohesive and pleasant finish.
Soft, still with ample body, though quite dry and now lacking a good deal of the whiskey. Rounded and mellow, with no alcohol noted. Some earthiness, lots of nuts, caramel, toffee, wheat and pepper. Certainly tired and over-the-hill, but obviously a well-done beer and still enjoyable in its mellow flavors.

Brewery draught, 6/8/25.
Cloudy, bright-rose-peach liquid. Small, pinkish head.
Intensely fruity and juicy with sugars softening the acidity. Excellent strength of aroma with no alcohol noted.
Juicy and soft with plentiful fruity acidity balancing an excellent malt and wheat texture with just enough sugar to keep it soft and drinkable. Still amply tart, but with luscious fruit.

Brewery draught, 6/8/25.
Pale golden-maize. Heavily hazy, with a small, white head.
Juicy and bright with a bit of earth/mineral. Not too much citrus overload, with some light pineapple and mango to go with the fresh tangerine and light grapefruit. Good hop intensity, and importantly, decent acidity. Cracker, white bread and biscuit from the supportive malts. Clean.
Soft and malty with good depth and attenuation. No alcohol noted. Juicy with a bit of herbal spiciness, earth and mineral. Lots of fresh squeezed orange with some lemon and pineapple thrown in to keep it more dry. Love the slightly higher than average bitterness. Well-balanced and very drinkable with an excellent texture.

Brewery draught, 6/8/25.
Heavily hazy, blonde-maize-golden. Small, persistent, white head.
Juicy as all hell with the Krush not really adding so much of the intensely drying berry character I'm used to. Maybe the different format of the pellets? Whatever the case, it's soft, fluffy, juicy and has light tropical fruit to go with the citrus. Honey-like base malts gently balance.
Soft, fruity, full of lovely mango and fresh orange juice. Soft, fluffy malts adding gentle sweetness. Krush brings a bit of earthy and berry-like dryness, but not too much. Well-balanced and very flavorful.

Very cloudy, pink-tinged canteloupe. Creamy, off-white head.
Super aromatic, fruity, juicy, but yet soft and round nose. So expressive and aromatic but not overdone. Strawberry for days with a touch of juicy, lightly acidic white wine.
Soft, round, juicy, oaky, fruity, malty. Balanced and flavorful with fruit and great attenuation. So much God damned flavor and balance. This series CANNOT be stopped.

50cl bottle pours a mostly clear garnet amber with some spitty off white head. Nose is nice, malt and caramel and booze. Woodsy herbs. Booze. Flavors same. A little ketchup. Sounds bad buts there's umami. Caramel. A little metal. Full bodied. Boozy, sticky finish.

On tap at Peders, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has a reasonably complex bourbon barrels, some sugars, and moderate roast. Flavour is rich, with big bourbon barrels, medium roast, and medium sugar content. Very nice bourbon character, without being too brutal, finishing moderately sweet with moderately complex bourbon. Excellent.
