Description
The beer of Val Dieu is synonymous of quality and authenticity. It is the only Belgian abbey beer to be 100% brewed in a living abbey such as the famous Belgian Trappist beers. The monks of the Abbey of Val Dieu are the ones who are at the origin of the beers which are brewed today on the site. Historically, the Cistercian monks were famous for their qualities as brewers. The monks of Val Dieu are in line with this reputation.

Thick, creamy, coffee-cream coloured head, slightly irregular; opaque dark brown but with amber shine at the edges. Bit of (sweet) chocolate in the nose; fresh, herbal smell, also musky, but not very powerfull. Sweet, liquorice-like taste, even with a flavour as the aroma of stale, old dry black tea. Again, faint sweet chocolate. Remarkably thinnish texture, I suspect lots of candi sugar, not necessarily dark, fully attenuated. But it ill fits the character of the beer. Sorry to say, but this is lacklustre without being bad on any point. Dreary, even inbalanced, whereas microbrewers ought to excell if they want to concurrence the big ones.

Orange-gold; cream-coloured , huge & dense head. Vanilla, alcohol, white candi sugar in the nose. Very dry, candi-sugar dominated taste, sweet slight citrus fruit. Finish gives a bit more pepper, with just a touch of bitterness. Creamy, even a bit doughy mouthfeel; alcohol obvious and dry. Way too sweet tripel, very unbalanced.

Bottle A little thin maltwise considering what the style makes you expect. Pours a big white head on a hazy yellow body. candi sugar and Belgian spicines crowds out any malt.

2008-07-04, bottle at Le Carolus, Paris, 7-5-7-3-15=37
Hazy golden color; big thick head. The aroma is soft, malty, a bit spicy; freshly cut wood. Good flavor, very sweet for a Triple, with a very light fruity touch and a very light trace of Belgian yeast; the sweetness and light spices produce an impression of liquorice. Almost missing bitterness. Not a typical one, but good.

Golden color; nice and persistent perlage, supporting a rocky foam cap, generous. Nice Tripel aroma, delicate spices and lemon zest. Reasonably good malty body, maybe not really dry and spicy as expected; with some sweet orange peel. The hopping shows quite late…

Blond color; creamy head. Quite poor aroma, like paper. Ordinary taste, quite dry and a bit spicy, but malty, like a simple and weak Triple.

Bottled. Hazy golden. Estery and fruity. Firm with balanced sweetness and notes of curacao and wheat malt. Some grassy hops creates a nice, bitterish finish. I truly enjoyed this beer!

(draught under the name "Hoppetje") Fully hazy yellow-gold; very carbonised to full white head, reasonably stable. Very fresh aroma, green leaves, touch of aroma hops, pale malts. Wheat-like flavour, very grainy, little herbal taste. Slightly sticky mouthfeel, good body. Long-grainy, sticking aftertaste. On draught, a very good introduction to a Belgian ale.

Fluffy, cotton-like off-white head; orange-amber beer. Vanilla, nutty, sugar and unidentifyable spices in the nose. Short bitterness, followed by a more sweet-and dryness, slight adstringency. Caramel flavour, maybe toffee. Warming up, turns to totally different, yeasty, typically meaty flavours. Well-bodied, slightly slick. The difference between cooled and warmed up is really marked. And I rather have the cooled version.

This beer has an ugly darm amber color but an OK head. The aroma is sweet malty and the flavor is boring malty with no body and only a slight bitterness. This beer lacks complexity.

Pours clear yellow-orange with a thin/medium off-white head, leaving fair lacing. Aroma has some sour fruit (grapes, pineapple) and abundant bready, earthy esters. This Tripel is on the dry side, with a predominantly estery flavor. Bread, spice, and earth mingle with subdued sour fruit and candi sugar. Alcohol is well-hidden. Very drinkable and a very good Tripel, considering I typically prefer fruitier examples.
