Description
Leroy Het Sas : The original brewery "Het Sas", later Brouwerij Leroy, established in Boezinge in 1572; destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in 1924. Named after a lock ('sas' in Dutch) in the nearby canal. Cooperating with Van Eecke (Leroy Breweries Watou) since 1962. Both breweries merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016.
Leroy Watou : Established as a castle brewery for the count of Watou in 1624 and also known formerly as Brouwerij De Gouden Leeuw. Has long been connected to Leroy in Boezinge through family ties, with both breweries cooperating since 1962. They merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016; the Watou branch now does all the actual brewing (while Boezinge handles conditioning and bottling).
From the website:

This year's version of Hommelbier hopped with freshly harvested hops; 75 cl bottle with cork and muselet from Bierhalle Deconinck. Upon removing the muselet, the cork was shot out of the bottle with a force I have never seen before - in spite of having encountered many such cases in my history of beer tasting - and literally created a hollow in my ceiling, while a fountain of beer also literally hit the ceiling. I had to clean half of my place after this and could easily have lost an eye - I should (and probably even could) sue the brewery for this hand grenade of a beer. Anyway, what was left, produced an intricately cobweb-lacing, frothy and thick but very irregular, snow white, stable head and a lightly hazy, deep and pure golden blonde robe with very lively visible sparkling. Aroma of banana peel, white pepper, dried apricot, radish, lemon zest, white bread, jute bags, red apple, old dried out mandarin peel, dried bitter herbs, linseed, straw, old ginger powder and a sulfuric, stinky note of pond water, but very subtly so (and certainly not the infected aroma profile I read about in some of the ratings below). Fruity, crisp onset, fizzy carbonation (very sharp - not unexpected), banana, pear and red apple impressions yet rather restrained in sweetness; cereally, white-bready maltiness, soft, lots of clove-like phenols, grassy and 'green', spicy, straw- and wild flower-like hoppiness, earth and leafy with a dry citrus peel zestiness and even a light oiliness (as in grape seeds or something alike); yeasty aspects too but altogether remaining relatively clean so the extremely violent gushing is probably not due to infection in this bottle. Whatever the cause of this hazardous behaviour and no matter how much I hate to see the hole in my ceiling now, the beer itself - or what was left of it - proved enjoyable enough, saison-like, earthy and agreeably hoppy, certainly not worse than previous editions.

Big florals - bigger than most dubbels. Prune and some light leather. Cherry. Great mix. Pours murky brown with great head and lacing. Light sweet end. Nice stuff - subtle and we'll balanced. Tap at Sovereign.
