03 or 04 bottle, not sure. Pours well enough, cherry reddish brown, some dark yellow tinges good off white head. Bottle conditioned or heavily unfiltered. Aroma gets better as it warms, brown sugar, caramel malt. Flavor is so mellow, soft and sweet. Chewy caramel meets raisins, dates and light fruits. Not a tremendous amount of complexity. Some yeast character. Lots of spices right away, but mellows out to just a good old drinkable malty lager. Dark, rich, yet very drinkable and good. Love this brewery after only 2 beers. (though they could get a bit more adventurous and branch out from the chewy caramel malt/browns sugar base). Solid though and would drink again soon.

Slight burned, herb and berry aroma. Red-brown, low creamy head. Wooden, earth and acidic strawberry, slight honeyish finish. Lighbodied Dry wooden aftertaste. Not overly imressive, but interresting enough.

A murky orange beer with a dense small disappearing head. The aroma is of yeast, oranges, heather, and very spicy. The flavor is of heather, flowers, citrus, wheat, and acidiness. It has a thin body. Quite an interesting beer.

Complex aroma:Fruit (strawberries,figs, apricot), Port, oak, a hint smoke. Redish brown, low head and carbonation. Taste is a bit of a downer: Light Portlike, oaky, raisin and leathery notes, but not nearly as much as you would expect after the aroma. Surprisingly light body and lacking substance in mouthfeel. Such a good start and then then the weak second half - what a shame.

Spice (cinnamon,pepper) sweet and sour fruit (dogrose jelly). Cloudy yellow, no head. Typical citrussy wit notes with some unusual seasoning on top (ginger, passion fruit,vanilla), dry sourish finish. Lightbodied, amnesic mouthfeel, slight peppery aftertaste. Interresting Beer.

0.33l Bottle Honeyish malt, light hops, fruity and spicy belgian ale yeast. Hazy light amber, low head. Taste lacks complexity, light fruity (melon,pear) notes, hops hard to detect. Lightbodied, watery mouthfeel. Spicy (pepper, gunpowder) and light honeyish aftertaste.

Dark reddish pour, minimal head - strange, yet inviting aroma of yeast, mustiness, and lots of dried herbs and fresh vegetables - this stuff almost smells like a salad - touch of sweetness in the flavor, with a big malt profile - herbs and veggies from the aroma come through quite a bit - tastes like malty mixed greens - I know, it doesn't sound good, but by God it is! - grassy, earth and damp - would be interesting to cellar this for a long while to see what develops.

2003 bottle. (BB 4/4/2005). Oh hell ya. Big ass malt smell, brown sugar, belgian yeast, honey, and cotton candy. Maybe a touch of light fruity esters. Damn what a pour, bottle conditioned and just plain brown. Brown and a light brown sugar colored head to follow. Flavor is full, sweet, malty and perfectly belgian (though it’s from the dutch motherland). Amazing! are there no hops here? I couldnt have guessed. Reminds me of belgian christmas beers. Nowhere near the herbs I thought I would taste, though the aftertaste boasts of some leafy, lightly astringent herbs and spices. Hell ya, this stuff is so good. What a style. It’s a toss up between this and Kuhnhenn’s gruit. One is much more spicy and herbal the other, this, being much maltier and bigger.

(This beer might well be a collectors' edition from the more usual Koyt - painted 75cl bottle. But on all sites I tried, it is classified apart.) Colour: Brown-caramel; yellow-amber thick head, going down slowly. Nose: fruity and caramel at the same time, like fruit dipped in fluid caramel. Dark malts, and a touch of licorice. Alcohol apparent. Bitter taste, from burnt malts. Sweetness underneath. Again a little licorice retronasal. Mouthfeel leaves to be desired. Despite all the malts, there is a thinnish texture. Slight alcoholburn, spicy finish. From all recently tried Jopenbeers, the best by far. It has a vinous quality, equal to good Abbey dubbels, with a touch of Flemish Oud bruin. Just the mouthfeel/texture is lacking.

Following info from PINT, all Jopen beers are currently brewed at Van Steenberge plant. Slight white head, going down lacey. Yellow-green beer. Nose: diacetyl. Oh God! A bit herbal as well. Diacetyl less in the taste. herbal, like just-butting shrubs. Not bad, but I find no hoptaste. Retronasal a light smokey flavour. Medium-bodied mouthfeel. Diacetyl is not disturbing anymore in the aftertaste. In itself the beer is OK. nothing more. With that name, it's a shame.
