3/29/2010 Picked this up at Bert’s, a new edition to the growing selection of beer available in NH. Pours a pretty solid black color with a huge light tan head that sticks around forever. Aroma is heavy on the brown and candy sugar side with hints of vanilla and perfume. Very little roast or chocolate or coffee in the nose, odd. Hint of milk chocolate as shes warms, but also brings to the forefront a Belgian-esque phenolic aroma as well. Taste is rich malty and chocolaty with a bevy of dark fruits and a slightly acridic taste in there as well. Slight hop bite midway through leaves a long lingering roast bitterness in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body, high level of carbonation. I’m not sure if there are some wild yeasts in here or if its supposed to taste this way. The Belgian character is subtle, but its strong enough to notice and the carbonation is a bit high. Its an ok brew as is, but I think it could be so much better. If I dare resample this one I will re-review.

Pour is slightly hazy but there is plenty of yeast on the bottom of this bottle. Mild slaggy aroma. Nice fresh slightly tart laid back flavor. Easy to enjoy and fun to drink. Would easily pass as a session brew. Nice even mild ale. I like this one! Decently zesty and quite sophisticated! Very good beer drinken experience, should have purchased more!

1/24/2010 A recent edition to the portfolio of beer available in NH. Pours a pretty solid dark brown/black color with a creamy tan head that dissipates quickly to a ring on the top. Smells of chocolate syrup or light milk chocolate right up front. Slight bit of coffee, caramel, butterscotch and a faint non-descript dark fruit in there as well. Taste is slightly acridic with more of the chocolate coffee and butterscotch tones. Light taste of dark fruits then a roasty lingering finish. I find this to be very sweet. The very light carbonation accentuates the sweetness for me. Creamy almost oily mouthfeel with a medium to thick body. I thought this one was ok, but the flavors seem out of harmony if that makes any sense. Maybe some more carbonation would help. I may try this again because its not half bad and maybe I’m having a bad palette day.

Pours a slightly hazed gold into a tumbler. White head quickly recedes to nothing. Sweet tropical fruit (mango, pineapple, papaya) aromas. Soft with pineapple and coconut upfront turning to sour peach and marshmallow in the lasting finish.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a slightly hazy yellow-golden color with a medium sized soapy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was faint citrus and must with a light vague spicy undertone. The flavor was tangy orange and lemon with light undertones of must, pepper and cardboard. The finish was short with lemon and yeast. Medium body. Pleasant.

It’s easy to bash this beer after drinking so many American Pale Ales; the green hoppy goodness that usually comes with stateside pales is nowhere to be found in Whale’s Tail. This beer is an unapologetic English Pale, nutty and malty and fruity. The hops only serve to keep the brew from being overly sweet, and as a result the beer gets more and more like a toffee bar as it warms. The good looks hide a watery texture, so whatever flavors that do emerge are washed away much too quickly. Pass this can on by.

Whole Foods Market, DC six-pack ($9): Pours a copper-amber color with an off-white head and a little lacing (i.e. on the darker side of IPAs). Aroma is intensely fruity, grapefruit is in there plenty; hops of course are there, but who would have doubted that. A little bit of spice too. Taste is pretty hoppy from end to beginning. Astringency starts hitting in the end and leads into moderate, though not extreme, aftertaste. This IPA seems to me to be more of a left coast thing, but of course, that is not a bad thing. I was pleasantly surprised by this more or less random buy.

Bomber from Vintage Cellar. Pours hazy amber gold with a creamy/foamy off-white head. Aroma is citric, almost like bergamot. Near med body. Firm carbonation. Flavor is bitter citrus, hint of perfume, and it seems a bit wheaty rather than caramel. For a golden ale it’s got a lot going for it: ABV, bitter, nice tang in the finish. Very good.

750 ml Bottle thanks to JohnGalt1 for sharing. Pours out a cloudy brown topped with a cream tan head. Aroma of was oak, Brett, vanilla, grape, berries, sweetness, and tart. Taste had lot of complexity going on the entire aroma but much more in-depth. With a good berry tart and light pit fruit sweetness.
