Black with a lasting light brown head. Caramel, toffee and sweet chocolate in the aroma. Roast, slightly sour flavour, plenty of roast barley here.

Thanks to Glouglouburp for this bottle at bctc 07 trade. This was the last of 5 smoked beers for the night. Pours black-hole black with a small off-white head. Aroma is strong, starts with a rich fumy chocolate (think rich expensive dark chocolate). Then followed by hints of smoke and the way your hair smells after slaving over a charcoal grill all day long. Taste is very bitter-roasted-end-of-espresso, amplified. Some very mineral-like smoke. Yet it’s a pretty quaffable beer with hints of sweetness wrapped around a long bitter finish. No hint of alcohol. Basically, it’s a very rich chocolate beer with hints of smoke, how much cooler can you get. 341ml bottle, Hobgoblin tulip glass

Sehr dunkler Malzantrunk, kaum rauchig, sehr würzig. Im Nachgeschmack deutlich rauchiger, daneben nach Bitterschokolade. Test vom 11.9.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,10,10,9,5,11 - 10,00

Dark brown-black; yellow-beige rim for head. Wood, smoked but very refinedly, like a very expensive, lightly smoked ham. Very dry, a taste of wood and sweetwoods, gradually building up. Again sweet ham, honey-cured, and a touch of green apple-cyanide. Very good smoked porter. I cannot help it, but I usually like René Huards beers, this one is no exception.

341ml bottle from Glouglouburp, 2005 vintage. I also had a 750 at BCTC which was nowhere near as impressive as this bottle. Poured into a tulip glass, absolutely black color with a small tan lacing. Aroma is awesome-irific. Hits you first with charred smoked meat (just the way I like my meat), then comes some sweet smokiness and surrounded by plenty of burnt/charred characters. Strong, smokey, lightly sweet, and charred, how amazing. Taste is lighter with subtle chocolate sweetness wrapped in smoke. Leaves a long bitter coffee aftertaste. A light-medium body with some mineral/seltzer qualities on both flavor and mouthfeel. Low bitterness, very quaffable.

341ml bottle from Glouglouburp, 2005. It’s weird to see a bottle say "strong beer" on it, stupid American laws. Pours brown with just a bit of translucence on the edges otherwise too dark for any clarity. Pours with just a bit of a tan halo lacing. Aroma is very strong and starting to show some age. It’s very perfume-y prune which is sweet and strong but at the same time a bit rotten-fruit-like. Other aromas of meat with light soy sauce, dark plum sweetness, and some alcohol booziness. Taste is similar with aged, perfume-y prune, some chocolate, and a long aftertaste of rotten grapes, which seems like a direct result of the age (it is almost 2.5 years old). Still though the beer is very nice, sweet and fun enough to drink. Mouhfeel is a bit slick, like thin oil, its also under carbonated, which does not help. Low bitterness and leaves a long slight past their ripeness dark fruits.

Bottle: Poured a deep pitch-black color porter with a medium brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of smoked malt is well balance with some rich roasted malt with hint of sweetness. Taste of smoked is very well balance with some rich and creamy lightly bitter roasted malt. Body is really full with a creamy texture and some medium carbonation. I am really impressed by this one since I generally don’t like smoked beers.

Pitch black color, med-brown head. Caramel, dark chocolate smokey nose. Actually not as over powering as I suspected. Full bodied, smokey mouth, dark chocolate, dark cherries. Rich. Kick ass lingering smokey finish. Awesome stuff.
