Description
Maidstone has a long tradition of commercial brewing dating back to before 1650. At the beginning of the twentieth century there were still four independent brewers operating in the town, but by 1972 the last of these had been taken over and ceased production.
In 1983, after an interval of eleven years, Phil and Debbie Goacher opened their own brewery in the Loose valley thus reviving the art of brewing in the county town. However, in 1990, the need for expansion saw the plant moved to new industrial premises in darkest Tovil.
The modern brewing plant was purpose built and constructed along classical lines, allowing for full-mash brewing and open fermentation in stainless steel vessels. In addition, all Goacher's Ales are produced from 100% malted barley and whole Kentish hops without the addition of sugars or artificial colouring of any kind.
We believe that our commitment to excellence and traditional methods produces ales of distinction and character much sought after in this increasingly standardised world.

Handpump (@ The Flower Pot, Maidstone, Kent): Golden, almost clear, lacy smaller white head, moderate to solid fruity and bisquity nose, moderate sweet-bitter flavour, relatively full bodied; ślightly lingering bitter-sweet herbal hoppy finish with an illusion of alcohol in the aftertaste. Solid stuff…

Cask at White Horse Parson’s Green. It pours very dark brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is charcoal, smoke, salted caramel and sweet pear. The taste is smoke, charcoal, leather, chocolate, varnish, caramel, pipe tobacco and salted caramel, with a big dry, woody finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Nice stuff.

Cask at the White Horse, London. Pours dark ruby with a thick, off-white head of great longevity. Sugary fruit aroma, toasty malts, crispy leaves. Has a pretty big sweet flavor with a good dose of meat. Salty, with leafy bitterness and some rich, dried fruits. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet, dry and sticky finish, leaves, toast, mild leather, mild booze. A nice beer.

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Opaque dark brown beer, no real head. Smooth low carbonation palate. A little roasty malt with bitter licorice. A smooth but pretty grapefruit bitter finish. Ok but a few too many rough edges.

Cask, Kings Head, Kingsdown, Kent. Dark reddish brown looks with a slight beige head. Fairly subdued sweet malt aroma. Largely unremarkable malt driven flavour. A little thin and watery with some hop bitterness towards the finish. Drinkable, but not especially worth lingering over.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A dark golden beer with a thin yellowish head. The aroma has notes of citrusy fruits, malt, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and hops. I find it boring.
