Since 1992, McNeill’s brewery has consistently offered some of the Northeast’s finest beers. Brewmaster Ray McNeill has won accolades far and wide, including thirteen national and international awards.
Critics and food writers alike have praised McNeill’s products, including the Albany Times Union, “McNeill may be the best brewer in America,” or All About Beer Magazine, “The jewel in the crown of Vermont’s many fine beers.”
In 2008 McNeill opened the long rumored packaging facility just north of the venerable brewpub.

This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a murky semi-dark burnt amber to red color. Quickly dissipating finger’s worth of bubbly (with slight foam), and no lace.
The aroma had some sweet cooked corn edged with sharp burnt cake batter, weird.
The flavor was sharp burnt sweet cake batter with an extremely soapy aftertaste and finish. Got extremely hard to put the rest down my throat.
On the palate, not as sessionable as one would like for an amber ale, that soapy feel is smooth - I’ll give it that, but who wants spaciness to smooth out a beer. Low carbonation.
Overall, wow, what an awful beer. Really think McNeil’s should toss in the towel. Can’t hang in this state anymore and nor the business.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a ruddy burnt orange color with a decent transparency to it. Mild carbonation could be seen bouncing its way to the top (weird). Bubbly white to light foamy head was seen dissipating quickly. No lacing.
The aroma has some burnt toast, roasted biscuits, burnt grass and then the burnt chex mix. Everything seemed burnt, okay, not sure if I like where this is going.
The flavor was basically the same, everything is burnt, even the aftertaste and finish (which comes across fairly ashy).
On the palate, it sat between light and medium bodied. Carbonation seemed fine. Sessionability, well, if you like to sip on overly roasted ashiness for your APA’s, maybe this is for you.
Overall, was this a bad joke? Dave, you suck, if you’re reading this. Mother effer, how old is this? Well, if anything, if you like your APA’s tasting like a bad rauchbier, go ahead, but I think I got \"played.\"

This was poured into a pint glass at the brewery.
The appearance was a slight yellow color with a fast rising carbonation.
The smell, uh...this is where is goes downhill, metallic to turpentine, smells awful.
The taste pretty much copied the smell.
The mouthfeel was extremely hard to get through but that was kind of silky.
Overall, I wouldn’t touch this again with a ten foot pole, I’m afraid the pole would melt. Wooee, no thanks.

Cask at the brewery bar. Pours thick black with a foamy tan head. Sharp toasted malts in the nose, some lacquer, iodine. Medium sweet flavor, sticky and oily, with bitter cocoa, dried dark fruits, unpleasant ash. Full bodied, chewy, with fine carboantion. Warming finish with more ash, baking cocoa, paint, varnish. Tough to drink.

Keg at the brewery bar. Pours clear brown with almost no head. The nose has toasted malts, some pine, spicy and herbal hops. Light to medium sweet flavor with earthy bitterness, spicy pine, burnt grains. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish, a little boozy, more earth and pine, some rindy orange. Pretty meh.

On tap at the pub. I really like this mug of beer. Smell is quite neutral and the look is darker brown. Some co2 carries you thru. Mild and fun, easy a reserved. Nice stuff. Not bad! A simple friendly enjoyable brew with a tad of roasty impressions and ever so slight bitterness. God job McNeill.

One of the better alts I’ve had lately. Slightly darker beer. A little bitter up front but just enough to let you know its beer. Never in yer face and its easy to enjoy. Quite acceptable I’d say and very reserved. Medium mild finish.

Look, I don’t care for IPA but this is terribly rude and on style. I think its actually a double IPA. The description above says high hopped - AND IT IS! What else can be said. It ruins your taste buds with thick bitterness.
