Bottle Pours a clear deep redish amber witha huge sandy colored head that slowly recedes leaving lots of sticky web-like lacing. Aroma is not a very strong hop bitterness, more woody and grassy. Flavor is very bitter. Not in a particularly flavorfull way. Just bitter, sharp and harsh. The malt profile is eclipsed by the astringnet bite. Thank you Santa.

2005 bottling. Deep red-brown body with reddish highlights. Aroma of chocolate, bitter, piney hops, licorice, and coffee grinds. Bitter coffee body, charred malts, with a long, bitter roasty and hoppy finish. Hints of licorice and touches of caramel. Rich palate, dense flavor profile, reminding me a bit of Great Divide Yeti. One of those beers that wasn’t love at first sip, but improved in my mind dramatically after enjoying several ounces. A winner.

Thanks to jjpm74 for the trade (1 L bottle). Nose is roasty, spicy malts; transparent dark brown with a small tan head; coffee and malt dominate the flavor with a small smoky accent, and a note of dark fruit, and a hint of hop bitterness in the finish along with a little alcohol.

[tap at Spuyten Duyvil] It’s nice to see this brewery is finally in the NY market, and this was quite a nice introduction - smooth, creamy and full-bodied - a nice, floral/spicy quality, coupled with a pleasant caramel/munich malt sweetness made this a pleasure to drink - welcome to NY Thomas Hooker!

Bottled 2005. Dark hazy caramely-brown body, medium cream head. Aroma prevalent in the sweet aroma, otherwise dominated by brown sugar, caramel, and a touch of toffee with rough, resiny bitter, citric hops. Toffee also lends an interesting character to the flavor, complemented by caramel and earthy, leafy hops, brown sugar, and prickly, bitter alcohol. The effects of oak were relatively subtle. Nice full-bodied beer built for winter, but very nice even on a warm summer night.

On tap at the Gate in Brooklyn. Poured into an English pint glass. Color is a deep dark ruby with translucent edges. Cannot see through the beer. Rather beautiful in the dark bar. Aroma is weak - hoppy and malty mix. Flavor is mainly a bittery, burnt hop flavor with a coffee-like aspect (dont know how they did but its definitly there). Surprising flavor from a beer of this sort, really adds a lot of depth. Body is medium-light.6/4/8/3/14

Rerate 12 oz bottle. Well all the depth in the flavor is lost. Just seems like an empty shell of what I tasted on tap. I know these bottles are contract brewed and the draft i had may have not been. But what I loved about this beer is now completely missing. 6/3/6/3/13
