At Ghent Beer Festival. Pours clear light brown with a minimal head. The aroma contains oak, peated whisky, spices, and smoke (like smoky sausage). It tastes light sweet and light bitter with peppery touches. Soft carbonation and full body. Alcoholic with a chemical tone to it. Something’s off here - could have been better.

330ml bottle. Murky, dark golden to amber colour with huge, frothy, mostly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head, dark yeast deposit spots. Sweet-ish, fruity aroma with a cherry touch. Taste is bready malty, dusty yeasty, slightly fruity, a bitter sting; lively carbonation.

From tap, note it was bottled at Alvinne and not Gaverhopke. Orange trouble, col blanc-cassé. Arôme au nez clairement centré sur le BA, note de peat assez plaisante mais couvrant le tout. Peu en terme d’Espelette. Retrouve un malt caramel, un houblonné modéré fleuri reste timidement présent. Palais est boozy, avec une touche rappelant presque le genévrier, note de tourbé, collant aux lèvres. Espelette perce plus sur la fin sans pour cela apporter un grand changement.Le tout semble être un peu partout sans être vraiment trop effectif. Note que le tout vient du même lot que la version Alvinne usant aussi de piments d’Espelette.

Draft. Orange, col crémeux blanc-cassé. Arôme assez belge niveau levure, épicé en rétro avec une pointe de caramel; houblonné noble, léger biscuité et effluve épice perdurant en rétro. Galanga est modéré s’apparentant au gingembre mais restant plus doux. Palais est léger finement épicé avec une touche de gingembre sur une base belge, petite note biscuitée au malt pâle et pils, touche de biscuité sucre brun et un houblonné plutôt noble arrivant en fin de bouche.

After Leviathan and Kraken, d’Oude Maalderij now added this third barrel-aged barley wine to the series, with a similarly attractive label, this time depicting H.P. Lovecraft’s godly sea monster. Apparently simply a blend of Leviathan with Kraken, so partially matured on Ardbeg barrels and partially on brandy barrels. Off-white, moussy, regularly shaped head, hazy amber robe with ochre hue. Aroma has peated whisky (i.e. iodine), sourdough, cognac, oak, vanilla, candied apple, white bread, a hint of dried peppers and the same intense solvent quality of varnish of nail polish remover that put me off both Leviathan and Kraken. Sweet onset, fig, banana, yellow raisin, bready and caramelly malt core buried under an increasing amount of solvents and wry, even burning alcohol accentuated by a light pepper accent from the Espelettes. Messy, alcoholic, solventy: this beer has the same basic issues as both its older brethren. Too bad, because I like the concept (and the labels) a lot.

Clear brown appearance. Aroma has a slightly medicinal edge to it. Nice thick texture. Flavour is sweet and syrupy.
