Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

A very red unclear beer with a pink disapearing head. The aroma is a very sweet raspberry aroma - too sweet for my liking. The flavor is artificial raspberries - and too powerful of raspberries. Not a good interpretaion of a Framboise - even though the idea was Pierre Celis'.

A beer the same red as a Danish mailbox with no head. The aroma is nice; a sweet cherry aroma. The flavor is way too sweet - with a powerful artificial cherry note, while the body is thin. Not a recommendable beer - the cherry sirup makes it too artificial.

Blonde, with soft visible carbo. Slight haze, though served just a hair below cellar temp. Voluminous white head. Aroma is slightly bready, slightly plasticy (I've long felt this brewery's yeast is just plain dirty). Hints of mint & fennel have slightly interfered with what I've expected in this brew. Palate is heavy-sitting with oil and alcohol, sour rambutans, odd herbs. Slight lime note is a distraction (so much so that I swear my mind's palate drifted from lime to lyme). Finishes sweet. As van Steenberge goes, this is relatively complex but overall there are too many odd things here and I'm still not a fan.

This fits the profile of a Triple nicely with it's cloudy orange color, white head that laces the sides of the glass appropriatly and aromas of spice and citrus. Good body and balance support the flavors of yeast and citrusy malt which remain through to the sweet hop finish. Decent Triple.

This starts off with a respectable pour and only falters in the aroma and flavors. This beer needs more intensity to rate up with the better doubles, but was a drinkable beer. Maybe worth another try someday in the event this sample was below average.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 9th, 2004: This brew pours a clear gold color and is somewhat bubbly. Thin foamy white head and fair lacing. The aroma consists of Lager-ish hops, fruit and yeast. Kind of light body and fizzy, with malt, fruit and yeast flavors. The alcohol is very apparent throughout. The finish is very dry and citrusy, with a pronounced alcohol burn. I really wasn't all that impressed with this one. But pirates are cool.

Pours a cloudy reddish copper with a mountain of off white head if not poured gently. Big time yeast. Smells like a bakery. Very strong dough scents with a touch of soup / malts. Maybe a touch of sour milk. Sharp carbonation on the tongue with a yeasty palate.

A well rounded strong dark beer that hides much (but not all)of it's alcoholic strength quite well. The hops come through intact due to the opaque bottle, with no imported skunkiness. Lots of malt sweetness and body in this one. A warming, sipping kind of beer that might be a good candidate for aging.

The alcohol comes on first then lets you sample the sweet spiciness that lies underneath. The sweetness abates for the dry finish. The opaque bottles this comes in help to preseve the flavor and prevent skunkiness that I'm sure would have been there otherwise. Mine came in a six pack sampler that I recommend for trying several of their other creations as well.
