Older bottle from the cellar. Solid black with a thin tightly bubbled tan head that shows moderate retention. Roasty and rich chocolate aroma and flavor.

This beer pours black with a medium light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Sparse patches of lace. Aroma of rum, malt, chocolate and vanilla. Medium to full body with flavors of oaky rum, chocolate malt and vanilla. The finish thins out some and leaves a chocolate and rum aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap at Front Range BBQ. 2012 keg, they apparently forgot in their cellar. Pours a dark, brown color, with a medium, bubbly, beige head. The nose is tobacco, toffee, black pepper, and bready malts. Sweet and sharp, with a mild bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a syrupy, lightly acidic palate. This is a tasty, malty beer. Quality, and it's held up surprisingly well.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in 2014. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red, light copper/brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of huge raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, nuts, toasted biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, vanilla, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roasted malts, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, nuts, toasted biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, vanilla, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal, grassy, spicy, roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, nuts, toasted biscuit, brown bread/crust, licorice, molasses, vanilla, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance; and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and slightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 9.8%. Overall this is an amazing wee heavy! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/drying finish; amazingly soft feel. Perfectly balanced between super rich malts and fruity English yeast complexity; with mild earthy hops. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly amazing offering, and world class style example. Really blew me away vs expectations, one of the best I've had in the style. Aged wonderfully after 5 years. Best beer I've had from them, so it's unfortunate they closed. Really enjoyed their big beers.

Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.3%. Overall this is a very nice American amber ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance dark/bready/light roasted malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Very well rounded and nicely rich malt complexity, with balancing earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering; well made, and spot on style example. No idea how old this was, but it held up great for the ABV.

From May 2008

I bought this on my last trip to Colorado.

This pours black with a 2 finger head of tan foam. Some lacing and above average head retention.

The smell is mostly of roasted malt with a light chocolate smell. There's also some coffee that becomes stronger the more whiffs I take.

The taste has the coffee bitterness up front that's supported by roasted malt and a fairly light chocolate flavour. The bitterness is also very noticeable right before the finish which itself, has a bit of sweetness to it.

It has a medium mouthfeel and the alcohol is hidden pretty well; nice job done here as it has some good flavours going on and is fairly drinkable.

This pours from 12oz bottle a clear gold with lots of bubbles and a huge billowy head of foam with lots of lacing.

The smell is hoppy with big grapefruit and floral notes

The taste has loads of floral hops up front with a very good malty flavour lingering in the background. At times, the hops impart a really bitter flavour, at other times the malt somewhat balances out the hops..strange. Strange but very tasty. It finishes bitter, the mouthfeel is light and the carbo, well, it's less noticeable in the taste than I expected. Must be the Sam Adams glass working its magic on the initial pour. ;^)

I'm close to finishing my glass and all the flavours seemed to have mellowed some but in a good way. Pretty drinkable and certainly a better IPA than some I've tried.

Note to self: Get a Growler next time I'm in Ft Collins. The draft version is better on all counts.
