Description
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.

Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

@home poured into a tumbler. Hazy pale golden yellow colour, small frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma wheat, lemon, light banana, coriander notes. Taste light light heavy sweet and slightly sourish, lemon, lemonade, bit yeasty. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation, short sweet and light sourish aftertaste, yeast notes, refreshing, easy to drink, acceptable non-alc witbier.

Large foamy white head stayed on a finely carbonated, unclear light amber body. Tea, spices & herbal aroma. Medium bodied, tingly on the tongue & a cloying back. Herbaceous, Belgian yeast, spiced, tea & coriander tastes with a boozy finish. Deece

Bottle at home. A straight down the line white beer. Actually it was very drinkable with plenty of flavour. Pretty good stuff.

Pours with excellent foam on foggy orange. Smells of very nice orange peel and coriander, hard to tell the alcohol is missing. Flavour is soft fresh orange more coriander, good sugariness makes up for the zero alcohol but it could use more carbonation. Still, very nice.

Bottle from local Home Bargains store – cheap 79p ! Used to drink this a lot 20-25 years ago before in fell into the clutches of Inbev. Remember last tie I drank it (2014 my records say) being very disappointed. Anyway, it has an aroma of lemon peel with some spicy notes. Pours a cloudy pale lemon yellow with a small white head. Citrus dominates in the mouth, but not in a hoppy sense. Lemon peel, orange rind, coriander and other spices with a yeasty texture. Not much of a finish. A classic beer that has been dumbed down.

Bottle. Almost clear a.k.a. slightly cloudy amber/orange sporting a firm white head. Aroma of brown sugar, malts, candied fruits, vanilla, clove and assorted herbs. Taste is all that plus apricots, hints of apples, caramel, raisins, spices and honey. Moderate bitterness. Medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is kind of sticky. It’s a little bit boozy and probably more than capable of creating an impressive headache if consumed irresponsibly. Good stuff. Improves immensely with time.
