Bottle. A- Wheat, lemons, grains. A- Pale yellow color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Lemons, wheat, yeasty, sour, tart, funky. P- Light body, average texture, high carbonation, tart finish. O- I was super excited to try my first Berliner, so obviously I had really high hopes. Maybe too high. While this wasn’t completely horrid, I was let down. The sourness was just too much and it reminded me too much of a shandy. I wish I had had some raspberry syrup to try it with, that may have made a world of difference. I did balance it out with some maraschino cherry juice and that did seem to help, but the tart funky yeast taste was just not for me. It’s so close to being really good.

Tap - pours a deep hazy purple - rocky pink head - complex nose of tart, earthy fruit (skins, meat, seeds) - raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, lingonberry, snozzberry (okay, I lied about that last one) - nice texture of lively but soft carbonation - flavor is tart, lively, and complex, with prickly acidity, bright raspberry tartness, mellow blackberry - a lot of earthy, dusty, almost funky character through the middle, complimented well by the fruit skin flavors - some subdued, moderately bitter oak arrives late, complimenting the fruit acidity well - finish is semisweet, with a lingering acidic punch - a wonderfully complex and balanced fruit beer - fans of the New Glarus fruig beers should seek this one out - this isn’t as sweet as those, but utilization of fruit is almost as impressive as in those brews.

9% Bottle 890 yen from Tanakaya. Shared with David. A ruby red crystal clear pour, minimal head. True barrel character in the nose, whiskey, vanilla, oak, woodsy. Boozy but good, cinnamon, plums, honey, oaky, candy with whiskey notes. Very interesting barrel aged beer.

Pours cloudy amber with small white head. Clear, sweet aroma of malt and caramel, with fruity notes. Bitter, hoppy flavour, with touches of grass, citrus, and malt. Bitter aftertaste. Nice. Possibly the best Specialty Grain I have ever had.

It pours a more or less clear body, glowing golden colored and with a finger-thick dense, light beige head. The aroma is piney and citruspeel-ish, with some pale malts. Quite bitter in the flavor, with pine cones, citrus peel and some malty sweetness. Full-bodied and perhaps a bit low on carbonation. Lasting bitter finish. Overall, quite nice, but a bit too careful I think. 131122
